Positive Gun News of the Day

From Antioch, California, a slightly odd one–or odd in the way it seems to have been reported, at any rate. All the way back on April 17, a 70-year-old man and a 62-year-old man got into an argument at some apartments for senior citizens. The 70-year-old pulled a knife and tried to stab the younger man; the 62-year-old then pulled a gun and shot the older man. The attacker died this week (after being hospitalized since the incident), and in the meantime police arrested the shooter but subsequently released him and ruled the shooting was in self-defense.

As best as I can tell, none of this was reported until a few days ago, when the attacker died in the hospital–maybe someone trying to stab someone, and getting shot, was not deemed newsworthy until someone actually died?

From Sunday in Cathedral City, California, a man forced his way into a home and “made threats against [the] lives” of the residents. One of them, an 85-year-old man, then shot and seriously wounded the intruder.

From Saturday in Forth Smith, Arkansas (as reported in the Washington Post, a man shot and killed an 87-year-old woman with a rifle, and was reportedly attempting to lure other residents from their homes when a neighbor got his own rifle and fatally shot the attacker. Certainly not an unmixed “positive gun news” story, but interesting in that it very much sounds like this was a case of a “good guy with a gun” stopping a mass shooting.

From Monday in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, a man opened fire on five robbers who invaded his home, killing one and wounding another while the other three fled. The shooter was not charged.

From Friday in Riverside, California, an ex-employee of a barbershop stabbed and injured two of his former co-workers before the second victim shot and fatally wounded the attacker.

From Tuesday in Ogden, Utah, a man attempted to kidnap an 11-year-old girl from the playground of an elementary school. A teacher from the school confronted the man, and the girl was able to get free; the teacher then led the other students back into the building. At that point, the would-be kidnapper began trying to break a window in order force his way into the school. The teacher, who has a concealed carry license, then drew his firearm and held the attacker off until police arrived.

From yesterday in Detroit, not a lot of details, but a man who had broken into a house in the middle of the day on Sunday was shot and killed by the homeowner.

From Monday in Houston, a 74-year-old man heard someone breaking into his house at around 5:00 A.M. As the intruder broke a window, the homeowner shot him with a handgun. Instead of retreating, the intruder “became even more aggressive”; the homeowner then shot him two more times, killing him.

From a week ago in Memphis, a homeowner walked into his kitchen at 6:30 A.M. and found someone standing by his refrigerator. He drew his gun, and was able to hold the intruder–a local woman, apparently homeless–until police arrived. It appears the woman’s motive for the burglary was petty theft, and not anything more sinister; but she may have spent the night in the house (while the husband and wife who lived there were also sleeping in a different part of the house) and the thought of an unknown person–that you don’t know is there–being in your house with you all night is, at the very least, creepy as hell.

From yesterday in Douglas County, Oregon, a man came home and found a woman coming out of his house. He was able to hold her at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived and arrested her on several charges including burglary.

Judge rules California’s ban on assault weapons unconstitutional

“Like the Swiss Army Knife, the popular AR-15 rifle is a perfect combination of home defense weapon and homeland defense equipment,” he wrote in Friday’s decision.

“Yet, the State of California makes it a crime to have an AR15 type rifle,” Benitez continued. “Therefore, this Court declares the California statutes to be unconstitutional.”

Obviously

The office of Attorney General Rob Bonta said it would appeal.

My hope is that the 9th circuit will reverse Benitez so that the plaintiffs can then appeal to SCOTUS.

My worry is that they won’t to keep it out of SCOTUS purview to prevent the ruling from becoming binding nationwide.

From Thursday in Brooklyn, New York, a man trying to force his way into an apartment shot and wounded both people who live there (a husband and wife). The woman resident then shot and killed the attacker. (The woman was also the victim of a home invasion robbery at the same address in October 2019.)

From Saturday in Miami, a man attacked a homeless man, dragging the victim into the road and stomping the victim’s head and beating him on the head with a shopping cart, injuring the victim seriously enough to leave him in the hospital in critical condition. A motorist intervened, pulling his gun in order to stop the attack and then holding the attacker at gunpoint until police arrived.

From Sunday in New Orleans, a man jumped into a car and implied he had a weapon. The driver of the car did have a weapon; when the driver pulled out his gun, the would-be carjacker got back out of the car, and was later arrested.

From Tuesday in Oconee County, South Carolina, four people, at least some of whom were armed, broke into a house during the afternoon. The homeowner shot and injured one of the attackers, who was later arrested at a local hospital where he was being treated for a gunshot wound.

From Thursday in Atlanta, not a lot of detail, but police believe a man who showed up at the hospital with gunshot wounds was actually the aggressor in an attack on or attempted robbery of the shooter. Police interviewed the shooter (at the scene of the shooting), as well as the person who was shot (at a hospital); according to that article

From yesterday in Macon, Georgia a man and a woman were arguing when the man began hitting the woman on the head with a hammer. She then shot and killed him. Local law enforcement were still investigating, but the initial report is that the shooting has been classed as self-defense.

When your only tool is a hammer . . .

This is also a time when having a thick skull is a positive…

From yesterday in Sacramento, a man driving a pickup truck deliberately ran over two people, killing one pedestrian and injuring another. He then ran into another vehicle and attacked the driver of that vehicle with a crowbar. The attacker then produced a gun and got into a fight with a fourth man, who was injured either by being shot or by being hit with the crowbar. Finally, another person with their own gun shot and wounded the attacker, ending the rampage.

New York’s hottest club is “Sacramento”. This place has everything… [/stefon]
