Positive Gun News of the Day

From Sunday in New Carlisle, Ohio, two men attempted to rob a pizza restaurant; one was armed with a crowbar and the other with a knife. A delivery driver shot and killed one of the attackers; the other fled the scene.

From nearly three weeks ago (but for some reason only reported on yesterday) in Mobile County, Alabama, a man broke into a house in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 5. The homeowner was awakened by a notification from his security system, and confronted the intruder while armed with a gun. Realizing the intruder wasn’t armed (and that the homeowner had left his cell phone in the other room and couldn’t easily call for help while also holding the intruder), the homeowner chose to simply march the would-be burglar to the door at gunpoint and turn him loose. The homeowner did fire a couple of “warning shots” when the burglar started trying to go back into the house to retrieve his own cell phone, at which point the burglar did leave. (You really shouldn’t be firing “warning shots”, although in this case it seems to have worked out OK. And, as the homeowner points out, a lot of people in that part of the world would have just shot someone who had broken into their home in the middle of the night.)

Law enforcement were able to track down and arrest the burglar rather easily, since they had his cell phone (someone even called and asked for the guy by name—a call which was answered by a sheriff’s deputy).

From Tuesday in Sandpoint, Idaho, a man was hiking in the country when a bull moose charged at him. The man attempted to hide behind a tree as the moose wrecked his campsite, but the animal continued to charge at him, at which point he shot and killed it.

From the article:

From Thursday in Meyers, California, a bear broke into a house and attacked the occupant. The resident of the home shot the bear, which then fled. Authorities were able to track down and euthanize the wounded animal on Friday morning.

From Thursday in Yakima, Washington, a woman found a burglar in her daughter’s bedroom. (There were six children in the home, with ages ranging from 7 to 14.) The woman’s boyfriend confronted the intruder and shot and killed him. The burglar was a next door neighbor; police are still investigating to determine if any charges will be filed.

From Friday in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a man attempted to rob a homeowner at gunpoint, but the victim instead drew their own gun and shot and wounded the would-be robber.

A follow-up to this one, this article from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has more detail: The victim was driving late at night when the attacker (whom the victim said he didn’t know) pulled alongside him and threatened him. The victim pulled into a restaurant parking lot and asked the valet to call the police. The attacker also pulled into the parking lot, blocking in the victim’s car. The attacker then pulled the victim from his car and the two began struggling. When the attacker reached towards his back pocket, the victim drew his own gun and shot and wounded the attacker. (It does not appear that any gun or other weapon belonging to the attacker has been found.) The attacker then fled the scene, and has been charged with simple battery and kidnapping.

And an interesting article from Forbes about rising gun ownership among African-Americans, and efforts by activists (including black lesbian LGBTQ activist Paquita Wiggins) to defend the Second Amendment rights of African-Americans.

Paquita Wiggins:

From yesterday in Modesto, California, a woman attempted to break into a couple’s home by smashing a glass door with a fire extinguisher. The residents tried to warn the woman to go away, but she continued trying to break into the home while threatening to kill the residents. At that point, the woman who lived in the home shot and fatally wounded the intruder.

From Tuesday in Harris County, Texas, at around 8:30 in the evening a 20-something-year-old man broke into the home of a couple; the husband, at least, is described as an “older man”, so I guess maybe an elderly couple. The husband saw a stranger in his home “advancing toward him”, and shot and killed the intruder.

Deputies said the 12-year-old was protecting his mother from the home invaders who broke into a home on Winchester Lane east of Clinton Wednesday morning around 7:30.

Deputies said Brad Leblanc forced a woman who lives at the home into the house at gunpoint. While inside, the woman and Leblanc started struggling. The woman’s son, the 12-year-old, was able to get a hunting rifle and shoot Leblanc. Leblanc died, deputies said.

That sounds extremely traumatic for the child. Although, having your mother attacked in a home invasion and not being able to do anything about it would surely also be extremely traumatic.

From Thursday in Orlando, a teenage girl called her parents to report someone had broken into the home where she was alone at the time. One of her parents returned home and shot the intruder–apparently as the police were arriving. A different news story notes that the girl was hiding in a closet when her parent shot the man who had broken into the home, and the parent feared for the girl’s safety. The intruder received “non-life-threatening injuries” and will be charged with “burglary of an occupied structure and criminal mischief”. Police say the homeowner who shot him will not be charged.

From Friday in Greene County, Missouri, a man forced his way through the front door of a house just after 6:30 in the morning. The homeowner then shot and wounded the intruder. It does not appear the attacker knew the residents of the house, and authorities have no motive for the attack.

From Thursday in Sheridan, Wyoming another self-defense shooting of a bear. A black bear charged a homeowner from less than ten yards away; the homeowner shot and killed the bear, and the game warden has determined the killing was in self-defense.

From yesterday in Houston, Texas, a man and a woman were riding their bicycles on Sunday afternoon when a driver told them “they could not be riding around in the neighborhood” (which police indicate was nonsense). The driver then deliberately hit the woman on the bicycle with his car; the male bicyclist then shot and wounded the attacker. The driver was taken to the hospital, and will also be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

And to think that people used to accuse me of using the board as my blog.

Um…unless I’m missing something, this story is about a Firefighter nicknamed “Bear” who contracted Covid19 and died.

Nice catch.

Well, that’s utterly bizarre. I don’t even know how the hell I did that.

(An actual link to the story about the bear that was shot in Meyers, California, just to show that I didn’t hallucinate the whole thing.)

As @Bone (who unfortunately no longer posts on the boards anymore) said, going on six years ago now:

Of course the Pit thread is now over 9,600 posts.

After the trauma of the Trump presidency, the country is even more polarized now than it was then. Trump is no longer in the White House, but we have a Congresswoman (from my own state, though not my district) who spews the most absurd–and hateful–conspiracy theories imaginable. Understandably, this sort of nonsense causes members of the Blue tribe to dig in our heels, and become convinced that every single thing the members of the Red tribe say or do or believe in is not only wrong but evil. It can frequently seem that a liberal Democrat who doesn’t think the whole idea of a right to keep and bear arms is completely pernicious is an absurd contradiction in terms.

I will simply note that it is possible to believe in the right to keep and bear arms without considering their use in extremis “positive”.

But to each his or her own opinion. Carry on.
