@samsaffron, I have a question maybe you can answer.
In *Thread games * we have some very long and old threads. They have been locked because the post count is high. I really, really want them back. Is that possible?
There are extreme performance issues with gigantic topics, Discourse keeps track of a lot of aggregates at the topic level and performs a lot more work when you post on enormous topics. Hence we added that limit.
Is there a problem in just having a 100k post topic in 10 pieces? Then we could link to the next big piece from the end of each 10k chunk?
That sounds reasonable.
So if I understand, the list of notifications at my avatar icon will not go away even after they are read. What is the purpose of saving a note that I had a reply someplace once the reply has been read? I don’t need to see that notification any more. Also, just from the list by the avatar I cannot see when that notification was sent so I don’t know I’ve read the reply until I go look at it. That is ridiculous. I can ignore the badges but once I have responded to a notification, I want it to not show up on my avatar any more. Is there some way to fix that? I really would like to be able to check notifications without seeing a whole long list of them every damned time. Sorry if I am getting hostile but, well, I am getting hostile. Sorry.
That’s easy – set your list to “unread”.
That doesn’t work.
The read posts will only disappear from the list in preferences. They’ll still show up in the dropdown from the avatar; which is where they’re a problem.
I guess I just don’t understand how they are a problem. The only notifications I care about are unread ones; if there’s a trail of old notificationa underneath it doesn’t affect me.
They’re an annoying clutter that covers a chunk of the page and makes it hard to pick out whether there is something there that I want to respond to. Yes, the unread ones are, sort of, highlighted; but that mess below them still makes it harder to focus on them.
Fair enough; who am I to tell you what should or shouldn’t bother you? I agree that adding a way to delete notifications (or maybe simpler, a setting to only show unread notifications in the avatar drop-down) would only be beneficial to this software.
This. The badges are meaningless, but I now understand will go away soon enough. But it is wildly frustrating to have notifications linger around after I’ve either read them or tried to dismiss them. They’re distracting from the new notifications that should attract my attention. My eye should be drawn to what’s important, not to a whole laundry list of clutter.

Informational clutter is not a good thing.

ETA: However, you can go to Notifications and change the filter to Unread to hide all of your read or dismissed notifications. Forgot about that.
[/quote]Ah, thanks! That’s what I’m looking for.
I don’t actually know how I did it, but after being on this site for 10 minutes I shut off all the noises. I know I had to tell my phone not to accept notifications from Discourse. I don’t THINK I had to tell every browser that… (I’ve used 3 PC browsers.) But anyway, sorry I can’t be more helpful, but sometimes, just knowing something CAN be done is enough. I hope it is for you.
Think of it as very long pages.
Oh, and thanks for your help, samsaffron
In my case, I had to go into my browser preferences and tell it not to accept notifications from this site. That shut up the noise.
ETA: Sorry, I messed up the quote function again. Preview really doesn’t show the post as it will appear in regards to quotes, and I find I can’t tell whether I’ve done it right until I’ve posted. Then a five-minute limit is a problem for trying to straighten it out.
When you say “shut up the noise” do you mean that the read notifications no longer appear on your avatar icon? Because if you really did accomplish that feat I would very much like to know how!
This is directed at thorny_locust and I would be happy if I could quote correctly and if I knew how to highligh your name with the little grey box and @, but I do not. Sigh.

So if I change the filter to Read it will show the ones I’ve already read, and never show another one?

This is what I’m looking for. Once I get a notification under my avatar at the top right of the screen, and it’s read, I want it to go away. Seems I have sixteen notifications lingering around for no reason.

No, I will not earn more badges just for the sake of removing those old notifications.
I think the idea is that it always shows you the last ten notifications if you click there, and more if you click through. Since there’s nothing there OTHER than notifications, and the new ones are on top (and unread ones are highlighted) I don’t really care about the others. I am just ignoring them.

I think the idea is that it always shows you the last ten notifications if you click there . . …
I’d be content if there was a user preference selection to reduce that 10 (or 16 in my case) down to 5 or 3.

I’m still a pretty princess.

Just have to actually type @ + username: @kayT
Thanks so very much, @krondys!

No, I mean that every time I got another notification the computer said “Ding!”
That’s what it turned out I could turn off in the browser, by telling the browser not to accept notifications from the site. Didn’t stop the site sending them visually, though. Have been informed, in one thread or another, that there Is No Way to stop them showing up in the drop-down menu. You can hide them in your preferences; but they’ll still show up in the drop-down menu. The logic behind insisting on this escapes me altogether.
