I would not hate this quite so much if there were dates on the notifications in the drop-down menu. AFAICT there is not a way to tell what’s new and what you have already dealt with, and if you hover over the notification it says “new reply” for all of them! Even if you answered it last week! Seriously?

The notifications are sorted with the most recent at the top. The ones you haven’t dealt with yet are highlighted.
I don’t see any highlighting but maybe I just failed to notice. I will watch for that. And I guess newest on top is ok, but then why do they say “new reply” on each and every one? And, why not put a date for crying out loud. Dating things seems like a very basic way to make things clear. (As many of us have said about the use of 3h to tell me you posted something 3 hours ago instead of when you posted it.) Not clear what the aversion is to dates here.

I don’t see that. Perhaps it’s theme related.
Hover over them an they all say new post, badge granted, mentioned, that sort of thing.

So if I understand, the list of notifications at my avatar icon will not go away even after they are read. What is the purpose of saving a note that I had a reply someplace once the reply has been read? I don’t need to see that notification any more. Also, just from the list by the avatar I cannot see when that notification was sent so I don’t know I’ve read the reply until I go look at it. That is ridiculous. I can ignore the badges but once I have responded to a notification, I want it to not show up on my avatar any more. Is there some way to fix that? I really would like to be able to check notifications without seeing a whole long list of them every damned time. Sorry if I am getting hostile but, well, I am getting hostile. Sorry.
Me too, it’s messing with my need to control Notifications/messages received. I want to deleted them so badly, and while the dismiss all button is there it seems to do nothing at all. That long list of threads in my profile that I have no interest in ever reading is messing with my enjoyment.

If you no interest in ever reading them again, then you should set the notification status to something other than ‘watching’.
Also see your profile notification settings. You can change them so that it doesn’t automatically set topics to ‘watching’.

It’s very pale grey, at least in this theme. You have to look hard to see it, which pretty much defeats the purpose of a highlight.
In preferences I can set thread notifications to one of 3 preferences- tracking, watching or normal. None of these days mute. Once I open a thread I can scroll to the bottom page and change it to mute. Thing is I don’t want to open threads if I am not interested in the topic just to mute it.
I’m confused. Are you getting notifications about threads you’ve never read? I’m not.
Okay under categories in preferences I had cafe society on watch. Now if I remove it maybe that will fix it. I don’t want to mute the category but I guess I can!

Me too. Of the sixteen stale notifications that are hanging around in my inbox (in order):
- Replies to this thread.
- Replies to Another thread
- I got quoted in the Another thread
- Reply to a third thread (from several days ago)
- Replied to in a fourth thread
- I got quoted in this thread
- Badge notification: “Licensed”
- Discobot gave me a license to chill
- I got quoted in this thread
- Replied to in a fifth thread (about 4 days ago)
- Someone tagged me
- Someone else tagged me
- Someone replied to a sixth thread (about 4 days ago)
- More discobot stuff
- Replied to in a sevent thread (about 4 days ago)
- Another badge notification (4 days ago)
This list is visual clutter, and doesn’t really tell me anything new or important. It seems to want to tell me what I already know. If I could somehow edit or delete this list down to what might be important to me, that would be far more useful.

Disco still sucks. Sorry Discobot.
Do you mean your inbox, or the popup when you hover over your icon at upper right?
If the former, you don’t have your preferences set to match your desires. If the latter, well it does that. But after about the 4th time I hovered there I noticed that the new ones are on top & a different color. The other ones are immaterial.
And in 4 hours of doping it’s not like I hover over my icon more than a few seconds.
This doesn’t feel like a hill worth dying on.
YMMV.

I mean when I click on the icon and it drops down.
Granted, this is not the proverbial hill, but this is the thorny bramble one must forage through while patrolling through the valley.

Not nearly as bad as the minefield known as “the Pit.”
