Possible school shooting ~40mi NE of Atlanta (9/4/2024)

Not a lot of details yet, but the school has been evacuated and there is a heavy police presence:

Too often.

As of 12:35 pm EDT, 2 fatalities and 4 injured. One suspect in custody.

CNN is now reporting at least 4 dead and 30 injured.

Winder is 20 minutes from me. When I retired in 2021 50% of my coworkers lived in Winder. They flew the serious victim to Grady, where my SO retired from.

The governor urged “all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state.”

That of course is Brian Kemp

Senior Sergio Caldera, 17, said he was in chemistry class when he heard gunshots.

"My teacher goes and opens the door to see what’s going on. Another teacher comes running in and tells her to close the door because there’s an active shooter," Caldera told ABC News.

He said his teacher locked the door and the students ran to the back of the room. Caldera said they heard screams from outside as they “huddled up.”

At some point, Caldera said someone pounded on his classroom door and shouted “open up!” multiple times. When the knocking stopped, Caldera said he heard more gunshots and screams.

What a fucking idiot.

The information is constantly changing, as one could imagine.

In case some are unaware, not opening for anyone other than an authority figure declaring the lockdown over is standard operating procedure. Sucks for whoever was banging on the door but nobody wants to invite a potential active shooter inside.

Who do you mean?

And every year now like Christmas
Some boy gets the milk-fed suburban blues
Reaches for the available arsenal
And saunters off to make the evening news.

  • Ani DiFranco, “To The Teeth”.

My wife’s stepsister is married to a Barrow County sherriff’s department deputy; I’m sure he was part of the response as well.

And the little twerp lived.

He was a known problem.
This is a tragedy that could’ve been stopped.

Not blaming any entity. But the record keeping system seems likely to have failed.

Some reports are getting out that make Ethan Crumbley and his family sound like upstanding, well-adjusted citizens, when compared to these people.

The first clue might be naming their kid “Colt Grey”.

Reports that he was on the FBI watch list for a year? Is there no intervention possible?

My instinct (which may or may not be correct) is that that’s a good thing, since it increases our potential ability to figure out how and why this happened and therefore help prevent it from happening again—and because I want this kid to realize and face up to the horror of what he’s done, if there’s any chance of that.

Like how a 14-year-old gets ahold of an assault weapon. His dad says there were “hunting guns in the house, but the subject did not have unsupervised access to them”. I certainly hope that the dad doesn’t hunt with an AR-15.

If he’s after feral pigs he does.

It’s entirely possible the teacher didn’t recognize the sounds as gunshots. Perhaps the student didn’t either. Until, that is, someone came in and said there was a shooting in progress.

"Here at Gables is where Marty and I bought Lucy her first firearm – a GLOCK 43X – 9MM – which she is carrying today!

We did that, not only because we strongly believe in the Second Amendment, but we also want Lucy – and both her sisters – to be able to defend themselves.

As the parents of three daughters – there’s nothing Marty and I care more about than making sure Jarrett, Lucy, and Amy Porter are safe."

– Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp at the signing of SB 319 and HB 218 allowing residents to carry handguns in public without a license or background check.

If only Little Lucy and her Glock had been there to protect those poor students!

I don’t know GA law; can he be tried as an adult at 14 or will he be treated as a juvenile & out after 21?
