KHOU is reporting 8 fatalities.
And the assholesare already there.
From Silenus’s link:
That’s true, but we have this crap. What are we going to do about it? More thoughts and prayers? Or like the asshole in the story, “offer support,” and a “God bless y’all” (whatever the hell that means)?
The ap isn’t confirming the number of fatalities at this time:
ETA: Here’s the Harris County Sherif’s twitter account if anyone is interested in getting information about the shooting directly from them.

We now have averaged a school shooting every 6.27 days this year.
We’re #1!
Ever wonder how many fewer of these things there would be, IF the media didn’t go out of their way, sensationalize the whole thing, as much as possible ?
Looks like you are from Canada. It seems like you have a lot less school shootings than the US. Is it because Canada doesn’t sensationalize them when they happen there? Does the sensationalizing of the US shootings not cross the border in the northern direction?
No.
It’s Texas. It is tough to go to lunch without running into at least three assholes.
While the unintentional glorification of mass shooters is a genuine problem, “the media” is not putting weapons in anyone’s hand, or defunding public health programs to deal with people who have violent mental illness problems, or in any other way directly contributing to the public mass shootings that occur in the United States at a rate more than an order of magnitude more frequency than any other developed nation in peacetime. And it isn’t as if the media in other nations do not give attention to shootings when they occur; they just don’t feel compelled to give equal time to an organization that belittles victims and whose ill-conceived solutions consist of insisting that more guns will somehow correct everything.
Stranger
Original Guardian headline just said “Eight dead in Santa Fe school shooting” (implying NM, where I live).
Not that it’s not awful anyway, but on your doorstep, families you might know, is another level.
Thoughts and prayers all around.
The school I work at feeds into a Santa Fe High School. I have colleagues and former students there. I was sick to my stomach when I first saw the headline.
And now I feel incredibly guilty that I’m relieved that a different school is the one that got attacked.
I’m gonna need to drink after work.
I thought it was pretty easy to get permission to carry a gun around in Texas. Why weren’t there 100s of “good guys” putting a stop to the shooting?
Who cares. They’re all actors anyway.
And that wraps it up for our household. Online school it is for the next year and a half.
Funny how trained international terrorists have a devil of a time getting at any aspect of the infrastructure, but half-witted teenagers can get tremendously lethal firepower into a high school seemingly at will. No point pretending anymore where our government’s interests lie.
This is proof that the death penalty is not an effective deterrent.
Not to derail the thread, but the problem with this is that you can’t tell what the crime level would be without the death penalty. This is like saying, “Mozart didn’t make my kid smarter; he listened to Mozart for years and his IQ is only 97.” Yes, but what if it would have been even lower if not for his Mozart exposure?
To counter we could examine the instances of school shootings in countries where CP is banned. Except no such events spring to mind.
CNN just reported total 10 dead ( 9 students and 1 teacher.
Also mentioned is that pipe bombs and/or pressure-cookers are being found. FUCK! A 17-yr student in custody. Legally ‘adult’, I bet.
Those countries have different people, different cultures, different media, different politics, different histories, different gun laws, and a thousand other variables that make it too complex to determine the difference that capital punishment makes.
