Possible school shooting ~40mi NE of Atlanta (9/4/2024)

Seriously? I don’t like it & I think anyone is a freak for having hair like that but I also respect you’re allowed to be a freak if your want & I don’t get a say in it (unless you’re looking for me to hire you). Doesn’t deserve suspension or detention for looking like an idjit; he’s probably not the only one in that school who does it, either.

One student shot in [Joppatown](https://www.wbaltv.com/article/joppatowne-high-school-september-6-2024-emergency-response/62083087), MD HS by another student today

-* Joppatown is off of i-95 about halfway between Baltimore & the DE line.

This link should work.

Some details:

The sheriff said a 16-year-old boy, for whom Friday was his first day at Joppatowne High School, shot a 15-year-old classmate in a bathroom. Gahler said it’s believed a single shot was fired that struck the victim.

Gahler said school nurses attended to the victim, who was flown to a hospital in serious condition.

[snip]

The sheriff said the 16-year-old suspect fled the school and was apprehended within minutes at a nearby apartment complex, but a weapon has yet to be recovered. SkyTeam 11 video showed authorities taking a person into custody.

The sheriff said the teenager will be charged as an adult, and a motive remains unknown.

The sheriff said the principal, who heard the resulting commotion, and the school resource officer responded immediately.

“The system worked and it worked in this instance,” Gahler said.

The sheriff said the first outside deputy arrived at the school within two minutes and upwards of 100 officers were at the school within 15 minutes

Oh, and at the end of the story there’s this:

When asked about how the student could have come into possession of a gun, Gahler said, in part: “We need parents to be parents, as in any situation, to know what their kids are up to.”

From the quote by @EddyTeddyFreddy:

The system worked and it worked in this instance

Well, no, it didn’t.

A student brought a gun to school. Then he shot another student.

If that’s an example of the system working, then it’s a damn poor system.

Completely agree, which is why I included that.

He probably isn’t.

So there were red flags about this kid–in Georgia, which has NO RED FLAG LAWS. Georgia also boasts NO universal background check laws and NO safe storage laws.

Clearly the states which, like Georgia, take pride in enabling mass shooters, need to have citizen revolts (at the ballot box and perhaps in peaceful public demonstrations) to change these things.

But a larger, nation-wide issue, is that too many people in power are determined to continue enabling the possession of weapons of war among non-military, non-law-enforcement citizens.

Could this Georgia kid have slaughtered four people with a handgun? Yes, possibly he could. Would he have done so, given that he would lack that “cool factor” that (I’m guessing) he associated with wielding an AR-style semi-automatic?

Possibly not.

If Sandy Hook didn’t lead to change, nothing will.

Or the Florida (school) one, or the Vegas (concert) one or the other Florida (nightclub) one or that Texas (school) one.

You are right! Maybe if all these mass shootings had something in common, we could do something about that common factor to prevent it from happening in the future.

Hmmm… can anyone think of soemthing that all these mass shootings might have in common?

Gone over on the several prior posts. Not happening any time soon. May come to happen, but not soon with the way the country looks like now.

And they call it Freedom.

Something I haven’t seen discussed: how did the kid get the rifle TO school?

He’s 14, so presumably didn’t drive himself.

Did a parent drop him off? Don’t forget your gun and your lunch, Timmy!

Did he ride a school bus, and the driver and NONE of the other kids on board noticed a rifle?

Did he walk there, rifle on his shoulder, and no passerby thought, hmm, It’s not hunting season, wonder why he’s carrying a gun?

Maybe it’s because I live in a state with strict gun laws (MA) but I cannot imagine a kid carrying a rifle around NOT being noticed.

They break down. With practice can be put together quickly. In a stall, in the rest room. Would fit in a back pack.
Now we know why he needed to be excused from class.

Moderating:

Just a reminder that this is a breaking news thread. It’s not the right place to talk about gun laws, political action, etc.

Okay; apologies. I wasn’t thinking enough about the forum and designation.

Sorry about that, won’t happen again, Chief.

Correct. A largish backpack or gym duffel would suffice for many of the common models in the street.

On a related note, there’s a boy at the same school named Kolton Gray. AFAIK, they are not related and did not know each other. It caused a lot of confusion at first.

My old town had an alternative “school” for the worst of the worst kids, and I knew a few people who chose to work there (no education went on there; it was simply a warehouse to “keep kids in school” until they could legally leave). One thing that never changed was that they believed the school should have a urologist and a gynecologist on contract, to sterilize all the students as a condition of admission. (My biggest problem with something like that, TBH? Imagine the resulting STD rate.) I couldn’t watch “Beyond Scared Straight” because I found myself thinking the same thing.

This was in a small city in rural Illinois, I should add. It was moved from a downtown building to a shuttered elementary school in a middle-class neighborhood, and it was quickly moved back because the neighbors were sick of all the drug dealers that openly hung around the campus. I told the above story to a woman I know who teaches at a regular HS here (in the wealthiest area, no less) and she said that the alt-schools here have stricter rules than the regular schools, so kids won’t think they want to go there.

Here’s a link that works. This sounds like it was targeted, and TBH I can think of a few instances where the “victim” may not have been innocent (raped his sister, that kind of thing). We’ll find out soon enough.

That’s the easiest thing in the world to say, it gives a speaker a little dopamine hit of righteousness and accomplishes nothing.

[replying to the spoilered part]
You mean they still advocate eugenics?

Does that mean they have this policy in place or that they wished they had?

What would you suggest would accomplish something now?
