Possible school shooting ~40mi NE of Atlanta (9/4/2024)

Oh, dear God, no, they couldn’t have a policy like that in the States. They WISHED it was possible to do that, however.

Girls who arrived pregnant who had their babies, BTW, should have them taken away immediately after birth and placed for adoption, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

p.s. The closest thing that town had to school violence while I lived there was on a zero-degree day, unusual for this area, but a man robbed a bank across the street from the junior high and said he had a bomb at the school, so they to evacuate the junior high. They got buses there ASAP and the kids weren’t even allowed to get their coats from their lockers, so the thrift stores, Walmart, etc. were cleaned out of their cheapest coats, or the kids wore their last year’s coat the next day even if it was way too small. It turned out the guy didn’t have a bomb, but you can’t take any chances, and nobody was shot or otherwise physically harmed.

There an episode of vandalism at a Catholic high school during the summer, which included someone having defecated on a teacher’s desk (and my co-workers who had attended that school joked about whose desk THEY would have liked to have crapped on!). Funny thing was, two of the kids who were dumb enough to go on social media and brag about having done it were fraternal twin boys, and when DNA identified the culprit, he tried to say it was his brother who did it. (D’oh!)

Around this same time, a co-worker who lived in a small outlying town got a call from her teenage son: “Mom, I’m OK.” She panicked at first, fearing the worst, and then he said, “The school blew up.” Not exactly - the high school had two wings, the old one and the new one, and a 3rd-floor classroom in the old section had caught fire due to obsolete wiring while the kids were at lunch. Assorted buildings in town were put to use as classrooms - vacant storefronts, churches, even garages and outbuildings, as long as the kids could walk from building to building in a few minutes, and the school was rebuilt to modern codes.

This pisses me off to no end! Public safety information shouldn’t be put on a third-party website that requires one to agree to certain terms & conditions & have a signon which not everyone wants to use for one reason or another. I tried to pull up their FB page, I needed to signon; not everyone has a FB (or twitter) acct.

At least the Sheriff’s dept website has scrollers on the right side where they show the various fb & twitter posts. it’s not that difficult to set that up, in advance of any incident such that when they make a post one place it goes multiple places. Good on the HCSD for doing it right.

If only there was a method of communication where a database could be transmitted to all the schools with the push of a button.

People who have no respect for life and can easily trade one method of killing for another.

No, they actually can’t. Every so often i read of knife attacks, and you know what, the death toll is typically way smaller.

yes, they actually can. It would be easier to borrow or steal a car and run people over. Imagine kids waiting for a bus or just leaving school.

Moderating:

This is a breaking news thread, and it’s not appropriate to speculate about other crimes that other people might commit.

My apologies to all for contributing to this hijack.

Moderating:

Actually, the hijack started much earlier than that post. Rather than try to flag them all, I’m just going to remind everyone to stay on-topic.

What’s the freaking point of spoilering when we just have to unspoiler it and read it to find out why it’s spoilered? Why don’t you just leave it unspoilered so the grownups here can read it???

Acknowledging that the shooter was brought up in a profoundly broken system in a culture in which a child was given a weapon of war as a Christmas present and no one really bats an eye.

Take a minute to stop and think how incredibly perverse our country is if a child can get a gun and slaughter students in a school and fuck that child is a common response. This doesn’t happen once, it happens all the time.

Fuck that child.

That child was born fucked by being born here.

Now the grandmother to Colt Grey evidently visited the school the day before:

“ The maternal grandmother of the 14-year-old suspect in the deadly Apalachee High School shooting in Winder, Georgia, visited the school the day before the massacre to discuss the suspect’s alleged behavioral issues, the family revealed to CBS News Saturday.

“My wife had gone up there…the day before and met with the teachers to get him some, they were having some problems with him not going to school, and this kind of thing,” Charlie Polhamus, the maternal grandfather of suspect Colt Gray, told CBS News in a phone interview. “So, my wife went up there. This was the day before all this stuff happened.”

Also, the shooter’s mother called the school within an hour of the shooting, to warn them. I believe she lived separately from the shooter and his father, with the two younger children. I have no idea what prompted her to make that call.

I think he may have texted her ahead of time. I’ll have to look.

5 people were shot on I-75 earlier this evening. There’s detours off of a closed interstate into an area where a known gunman is on the loose. This is important public safety information that should be shared with everyone in the area.
The CNN website article references a video posted to FB for more info. I tried; if you google the PD dept on a phone / mobile browser & go to FB, first it tries to drive you to their app. If you decline, it won’t bring up anything. If your browser supports it & you go to settings & change to “desktop site” you’re required to sign in before you can see anything. However, if you change to “desktop site” while still on the search results page then it will bring up a viewable FB page. How many of the unwashed masses are technically savvy enough to do things in the right order to get info? The PD website must be on a small server that is overwhelmed because it won’t even bring up the page before it times out. Way to fail at sharing important information; you suck, London PD!

Good overview of the situation here from MSNBC. Based on everything known at least a year before the shooting, any reasonable parent would have urgently sought mental health treatment for their child. Instead the father bought him a freaking AR-15!

I have neither the facts nor the expertise to pass judgment on the appropriate course of action for the child, but “fuck that kid” is just callously indifferent to the plight of a 14-year-old child still in his formative years.

The father almost certainly will spend the rest of his life in prison, and good riddance.

Is it really “almost certainly”? Some of the things I’ve been hearing make it sound like Georgia state law practically requires kids like that to be given guns.

Interesting, what did you hear that makes you think giving kids guns is required in Georgia?

This was, of course, hyperbole—I did say “practically requires.” There’s been some discussion in this thread (among other places) of the laxness of Georgia gun laws, but some of it has been flagged as inappropriate for a MPSIMS breaking news thread. I hope my own post didn’t overstep; if it did, I apologize.

Well, what I’ve heard of Georgia gun law is plenty… checks forum… let’s just leave it at “plenty”… without “hyperbole” or other sorts of fiction being required.
