post count

why do all post counts for a user go up? in every thread to which they have posted? why don’t old posts retain the count they had when posted, and just the new posts go up?

does that make any sense? I believe i have typed ‘post’ to the point that it is a meaningless string of phalangeal phonemes.

It’s caused by the underlying structure of the software as you probably knew. Let me try to explain in a bit more detail.

When a member submits a post, a counter in that member’s hidden stats is incremented. Then each time a page is viewed, all pertinent member (and other) data is retrieved from the appropiate database and the page is built and displayed. Thus, the only data availble to build the page contains the most recent post count. This functions in the same manner as the sig lines. When you create a new sig line, it, also, is displayed on all past posts.

I hope this helps. If you need more info, you can ask over at the vBulletin site. http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/index.php

I tried to look up Cecil, and saw various counts, a few seemed to be first posts. How is that?

Some folks have tried to be funny and set up screen names similar to Our Leader, but there is only ONE Cecil that really matters around here.

We tend to close those names down as soon as we find them; that’s why they only have a few posts. They’re all imposters.
