Post-vasectomy questions

I had a vasectomy done on Friday, along with a repair of a hernia, so I was under general anesthesia, and have felt little if any effects compared to my hernia recovery.

I’ve been wearing briefs since then, and only feel a little discomfort when I let the boys hang loose.

Questions:

  1. When can I go back to my boxers? Is there a recommended time period?
  2. When is it safe to test the plumbing?
  3. Do you recommend a follow-up sperm count? My Dr. told me he was taking out a large segment and tying both ends…

Thanks…

I can only speak to #3:

Yes, always check for swimmers. They are tricky and persistent.

Re #3. Yes. Mine didn’t take. Had to have it done again. No Charge! Whoooo hooo. What a deal.

I’ll agree on the sperm count testing recommendations. My cousin’s husband didn’t get around to it…oops! Their little girl is beautiful, though!

Have the post-count done. And double check with the doc that he did cut a piece out of the vas deferens and tie off the ends, not just clamp it off.

I love my little boy. My sweet, little, post-vasectomy boy.

Can’t answer. I’ve always worn briefs as standard, only using boxers as p.j.s and the occasional emergency alternative to going commando. I would say that once the incision is well-closed and there is no risk of opening it back up, you’re okay.

You’ll know. More specifically, your little friend will know. I don’t remember even getting partial wood for a couple of weeks afterward.

I can’t imagine a doctor who would present not testing as an option. That sounds ridiculous to me.

I’m not a boy, but I did have my husband neutered, so…

  1. I would talk to the doctor. My husband only wears briefs, but I remember the doctor mentioning that it was for comfort rather than anything else that they recommend briefs post-vasectomy. The compression helps keep swelling down, so after a few days, it should be ok.
  2. Again, ask the doctor, since you had the hernia surgery, too. We tested hubby’s plumbing after a couple days  it worked just fine.
  3. YES!YES!YES! My brother has 3 sons conceived after a vasectomy. To be fair, 2 are twins and the third is illegitimate, so they were all conceived within a 6(I think?) month time frame – he had neglected to have his spermies counted – and now has an extra 3 kids.

I was going to chime in with another cousin story, but this just about says it all. Three!

  1. I always wear briefs, so not an issue.

  2. Maybe the hernia operation will delay things. I don’t remember waiting for more than a week, but mine was done with a local, and hardly hurt. I suspect you’re not going to blow out any solder joints in any case.

  3. Better be safe than sorry. I think our recommendation was alternative birth control for at least a month, just in case.

This was over 20 years ago, so my memory might be a bit foggy.

  1. I only gave one sperm sample after mine. Was too embarrassed to go back and provide samples 2 and 3, and the wife just laughed when I asked for her assistance.

  2. Some pain initially when test driving, but nothing compared to post surgery distress.

  3. I used a large bag of frozen peas as a compress. And yes, I made my stepson eat some for dinner that night.

DO NOT HAVE UNPROTECTED INTERCOURSE UNTIL YOU HAVE 2 SAMPLEs CONFIRMING NO ACTIVE SPERM UNLESS YOU WANT A BABY.

Give your first sample 8-12 weeks after the surgery, and another sample 2 weeks after that. So plan for condoms for the next 14 weeks.

Go back to boxers as soon as you’re comfortable wearing them.

Intercourse is fine as soon as you feel up to it.

thanks… definitely going to get tested after a dozen or so test-runs…

appreciate the feedback!

  1. I don’t know if there’s a recommended time frame, but you’ll know when you’re ready. I had mine on a Friday and I think I was back in boxers on Monday.

  2. Same as above, but I was back in the saddle on maybe Wednesday.

  3. Any doctor that doesn’t discuss the post-op procedure with you is a joke. The follow-up is part of the operation- the point is, you don’t want to have any more kids. Making sure the pipes are cleaned out and coming in for medical confirmation of that is the big magilla. If he thinks his job is done after the snippity-snip, he’s a quack. I was told to ejaculate several times before I provided the first sample for testing (came back clean), then told to wait a week or two and provide another sample (also clean). The beauty part is, they let us provide the sample at home and bring it in for testing. My wife assisted me in this regard, caught it in the cup they provided, and immediately drove it over to the lab.

Well, it is time for the sperm count, which I was told to simply “drop off” Thursday morning. I didn’t think to ask “in what”, and since I cannot call the office until tomorrow morning, I thought I might ask the dopers…

What exactly does one use to hold and transport a sample of male precipitate?

You can use the same receptacle you’d use for a urine sample…baby food jar, little tupperware, something like that. Small-ish, with a lid.

Whip your weasel several times to make sure that everything is cleared and flushed out. Have the count done. Whip your weasel once or twice more to be sure.

Then have at it.

I think I know “how” to do it… I was wondering what type of container you use to bring the “less-viscous fluid” to the site of the count.

I recall providing samples fresh on site - they gave you a jar and private room (no reading materials). I always wanted to close the door, wait two minutes, hit the nurse call, and say

“um - I’m gonna need a bigger jar”.

Si

I asked the nurse, who looked like she had seen it all, if I could bring my wife with me to assist in the collection process. She said, “sure”.

The only time she changed expressions was when I asked how many other people I could bring as well.

Shodan

I didn’t get my swimmers counted after my vascectomy. My plan was to wait a week and then “rub one out” a few times until the pipes were clean. I think I made it 4 days. They gave me a cup to bring my sample back in, but it got put away and forgotten. They mentioned that when I (should have) brought the sample back it should be fresh, I.E. within 15-30 minutes of producing said sample. The thought of strolling into an office park and handing over a jar of my still warm baby-batter to a receptionist ooged me out. I kept the little cup they gave me, though. If I can find it, do you want me to send it to you?
