You must have thought of a couple of subjects (for Great Debates, General Questions, etc.) that could have been of interest to the rest of the Doper community, but you chickened out at the last minute.
Here’s your chance. Give it a shot. Promise nobody will laugh at you (they might laugh with you, but that’s a good thing, isn’t it?)
huh? Is this going to be my only chance? Actually I did one in GQ a long time ago - didn’t get much response so I guess it doesn’t count.
(hows that for a 100th post? - yeah me)
I’ve never initiated a thread…maybe I will someday. For now I feel like too much of a “newbie” to risk it. Especially considering the fact that the thread I most want to start is race related.
Is not shaving, lapsed haircuts and no cologne meaningful in a relationship?
Does it mean the romance is over?
If he takes you to dinner without changing his shirt, does it mean he doesn’t see you as his date?
I normally don’t initiate threads because I usually [read: always] get ignored. So I don’t bother. I just float around in limbo, adding a post here and there, getting ignored again and again…
I rarely start threads. Out of all of my posts, maybe only four or five are actual thread-starters. Several times an idea has come to me, but I found that someone else started a thread about it on the same day that I was going to, or one so similar mine wouldn’t look interesting anymore. A few more ideas seemed interesting for about five minutes, and then I changed my mind.
I do need to ask for some parental advice, so I think I’ll start a thread somewhere. My son and my nephew both take after their dads, and have very large waists. My nephew is now so large in the waist that he can’t wear anything but gym pants. I need to know if any other parents have dealt with finding clothes for larger children, because gym pants aren’t appropriate for every occasion. I don’t think it will be a hugely popular topic, but hopefully someone will have some good ideas.
So, I just have to decide whether mundane, pointless polling goes in IMHO or MPSIMS.
Anyway, I’m not much of a thread starter. I like to just go with whatever is out there already.
I’ve started a tiny handful of threads. I don’t like to start a thread unless I have time to check back on it frequently. I once started a thread, got really busy, and forgot all about it. Dug it up a few days later to find that I’d had responses to it. I now try not to start a discussion unless I can commit myself to sticking around to answer replies, just in case my thread does NOT sink instantly in the usual fashion.
I’m also really, really shy. It’s easier for me to enter an ongoing dicussion, than it is for me to start my own. Y’all are an interesting bunch of people, and there’s usually plenty of existing threads here to keep me busy.
(I have an IMHO question about homeschooling, but there’s a thread going in GD right now on that topic. I’m waiting to see where that one goes.)
If I do start a thread, which is rare, it’s in MPSIMS. The other forums, I just read. I’ve started one thread that got two pages of replies, and if it hadn’t been about a terrible subject, I would’ve been much more proud of it.
If I see someone’s thread down at the bottom of the page with 20 views and no replies, I’ll always try to post something to it… even if I really have nothing to add. That way they at least get one, and don’t feel like they’re being ignored.
In what way? These are the questions I have. I thought you were asking what my thread would be and it is found wanting! This encouraging-non-judgemental thing isn’t working out well for me. Constructive critism, please.
I’ve only initiated one thread in the time I’ve been on the SDMB, and that was tangent to an existing thread.
Every time I come up with a question, I find it answered either in the archives or somewhere on the boards.
Of course, my replies to posts are usually either ignored or they become threadkillers, so I’m not sure what kind of response a post from me would receive anyway.
That sounds very whiny and self-pitying, doesn’t it? Maybe I need to start a “poor, pitiful me” thread in MPSIMS to attract attention and sympathy.
Oh, I just remembered a question I thought of, but figured was too stupid to post:
How do you pronounce “MPSIMS”? I say “Em Pee Sims.” Anyone else have another version?
