I was able to resolve the issue of images being replaced by text by manually loading the missing images one time each. If I load one of the images directly (for example: https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/images/buttons/firstnew.gif ) I temporarily see this redirect error. but after a few seconds the image loads. At that point that image always loads correctly while browsing the boards in general.
In order to find the image that the text is replacing you have to view the docoument source and find it which is a PITA. Here are a few of the ones I still have in my history:
That issue, while no doubt also related to the HTTPS changes, seems to be separate from the issue of formatting buttons, smilies, etc. not working when posting. I no longer have those problems even when loading the https version, but still find the occasional image replaced by text until I manually load it one time.
I’ve not been having problems with buttons and whatnot not working, but I have been having problems with logging in and staying logged in on my phone since the change. I am also now having the IE secure content warning pop up every. single. damn. time. I. click. anything, while logged in on my laptop. The real bugger though, that caused me to post today is this; I was using my dad’s desktop computer which is new with winx and chrome browser* and was logged in and typing a reply to a thread when the entire machine just locked. Sat there for about 10 minutes shuttling the mouse around, hitting the space bar, pushing the escape button or control-alt-del to no avail before I gave up and did a hard reboot. Now that may not be a board related issue at all, but it just seemed a little too coincidental to me.
*I’m sorry I can’t help it, Fury Road has associated the word with war boys forever for me, to wit and misquote; “I’ll escort you into googlehala myself; all shiny and chrome!”

ETA: Not sure how you did that, when I clicked your links the images now load for me. But when I found one that you didn’t link “thread_new.gif”, i get a 404 error with the http address, but if i click just the image link from the page source, the image will load that one time, but not on any other subsequent page requests. Any ideas?
I think the trick is to manually go to “https://” and then the path to the image. If you click it directly from the source it may go to the ‘http’ version.
