Posting to message boards and living life.

It amazes me how many posts some members of this and other message boards have. There are people who seem to lead productive enough lives yet somehow manage to post here and elsewhere 20, 30 etc. times a day. How do they do it?
I have a fairly high post count but even if I had nothing else to do today I doubt I’d post on here more than a dozen times, topics permitting, unless I was just acting the eejit and posting randomly, padding.

It depends on which forums you’re posting to. I can see how the people who mostly hang out in MPSIMS and IMHO rack up lots of posts. Most threads there don’t require long, well researched answers, especially if you’re one of those people who posts right after reading the OP.

This has come up a couple of times in the past, and my thought is that is has to do with the fact that some people can read and post while at work.
I have no internet access at work, so there’s a huge chunk of time when I can’t post at all. If If I had a desk job with a computer in front of me all day, my post count would definitely be higher.

I post at work. I can read fast, and type fast, so it hardly takes me any time to read, dash off a quick note, an complete my next task.

I got all highly effectives in my review in December, so it’s not as though I am slacking. I definitely could do more work but my job is pretty exhausting as it is and I get a lot done already. Reading the Dope gives me some downtime in-between tasks.

Plus, it helps that my work is all about switching from task to task to task, all day long. Complete one, move to the next. Etc. So in between…I post.

My posting significantly drops once I leave wor, and most nights I don’t post or read at all. I miss a lot of things on the weekends - I remember coming back several times on Mondays to one drama or another.

And yet I still have a life.

Pretty much what 'mika said. I’ll usually post at work when I’m waiting for some code to compile, which is pretty often. When I’m at home, I usually have lots of other stuff to do and can’t be bothered.

I can’t post at work but when I first joined, I could. But, most of my posted didn’t come then.

When I’m off from work, and either studying (online classes) or playing WoW, I’ll generally take breaks and read a thread or two and post a bit. Some times I’ll post 20 or so a day but other times I’ll go 6 months without even logging on. It all averages out.

I don’t spend my entire day here.

OH yeah, I also read fast and type faster.

Yeah - my work day is spent in an office, sitting at a desk, with a computer on in front of me. The pace of my work is not crushing. Whenever I want to take a brief break from whatever I’m working on, I can cruise through the front pages of the forums in just a couple of minutes.

I would be surprised if as many as 5% of my posts were from non-work hours.

Another work poster here. When there’s nothing to do, this is what I’m doing.

And another here ( well, not right now ). 70% or more of my job is “sit and watch.”

I’m gonna have to talk to all your bosses. Thanks for the responses folks.

I’ve averaged 2.29 posts per day in the 10 years since I joined. Sometimes I just read and don’t say anything at all. I try to choose my words carefully.

Average 6 posts a day.

I work from home.

Yeaaaah. Thaaat’s the ticket.

I type 90 words per minute and some of my posts are short. Like this one. So banging out a couple dozen doesn’t take me long at all.

I post in spurts. Probably my most prolific times were the two times I’ve been deployed. Despite the fact that I am trained to be a steely eyed killer I’ve been firmly entrenched in from of a computer both times. A good portion of my work day I am waiting for things to get done scanning and I browse in another window. And then there are times like now when I went back to the office to make a phone call and started reading again. On my first deployment it sucked when they did a firewall change and I lost the Dope due to collateral damage.

But you average less posts a day than I do. It’s hard to quantify but there’s a rate above which I just could not post regardless of employment.

If I average fewer posts it’s likely because I have NEVER been able to post from work. When I was traveling to Chicago everyday that was 10-12 hours out of the house, 8 hours to sleep, at least 1-2 hours for eating, hygiene, acknowledging the presence of my spouse… many days that was less than an hour for posts. For most of the time I’ve been on the board I’ve had very little time in which to speak my mind.

Are all your posts since your join date? 'Cause that would be a pretty friggin high rate of posting.

Just sayin’…

My average rate is 1 one post a day more than yours. Half a dozen posts a day seems feasible to me because I’ve done it and do it but 20 or 30 or whatever that some people seem to manage surprises me. It’s not a criticism of anyone who posts at such rates. I’m just expressing my bewilderment at people’s ability to post at these rates and still (AFAIK) lead productive lives.

For some people, of course, that’s close enough to criticism as makes no difference. :dubious:

It always strikes me as ironic, bordering on absurd, when usenet or bboard trolls choose to savage a fellow poster on the grounds that they’re a lame-ass mentally-handicapped basement-dwelling so-and-so simply because of the fact that they post to the same ng/board. Which the troll hi/rself is doing at that very moment.

Productive? Even my supervisor doesn’t expect that of me. :stuck_out_tongue:
