I just noticed that if I post two consecutive messages in one thread, the counter for my number of posts does not increment. Check this out:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?postid=948047#post948047
Both posts are numbered 358. I noticed this happened in a couple of threads. Looks like a bug to me.
Could be, I’ve noticed it myself. I just dismissed it, thinking it was just me.
A WAG: it has something to do with posting twice in a row - as you already concluded. But let’s see what the Tech Gods have to say about this.
The number of posts listed is always accurate as of the current time, not as of the posting of the message.
F’rinstance both posts in that thread have 359 listed.

And if I found Coldfire’s very first post back in July of '99, it would say 5541 next to it. Holy crap, 5500 posts! Damn, that’s just a very big number.
The counter apparently has some sort of lag to it, but it does catch up. Eventually.
