I am going to be projecting a PP presentation onto a screen for a group of around 30 people. Most of it will be in slideshow mode, but there will be several instances where I will have to go back into ‘regular’ mode in order to edit a slide on the fly.
In regular mode, there is a column along the left margin that shows all the slides in miniature; I don’t want these projected onto the screen.
Questions:
Are these small slide ‘icons’ projected? Or are they only visible on the laptop screen?
If they are projected, is there a setting to turn this off? (is it just a matter of sliding that bar to the left to hide them?)
I also don’t want the upper horizontal ‘ribbon’ with all the editing buttons projected onto the big screen.
I guess what I need is a way for all this to be visible to me on my laptop but not to everyone else.
(this was harder to explain than I anticipated; I hope I’m making sense)
You can hide the thumbnails by sliding the border between that and the full slide to the left.
You can hide the ribbon in PowerPoint 2007 by right-clicking on the ribbon and then selecting “minimize the ribbon.” If you have 2010 there is a caret (little arrow) in the upper right corner you can click to hide the ribbon.
By default most laptops will display to the projector the same thing on the built-in screen. There are options to change this. If you want something visible on your laptop but not on the projector, you have to configure your laptop to use two monitors. The details will vary depending on what version of Windows you have but generally you go to the display settings in Control Panel and select “extend monitor.” This allows you to treat the built-in screen plus the projector like one big virtual screen split in two. However, PowerPoint does not allow you to have two completely separate windows, so you can’t easily show one version on the projector and one version locally. You can view the same presentation in multiple windows but they are all children of the main application window. This makes it difficult to split it onto two screens. If you want to try it out, under View select “New window” and it will open a second window with the same presentation.
Are you talking about trying to display two different presentations at once?
If it’s a single presentation, you can display just the slides on one monitor and on the other, a window comprising speaker notes and slide navigation (with thumbnails of the slides)
After some experimentation I found I was able to do this with PowerPoint 2010 and suppose it would also be possible in 2007, although I do not have 2007 loaded on my laptop so can’t try it out with dual monitors. This is contrary to my earlier post about child windows.
I just checked in Powerpoint XP (2002) and it’s also possible there - I think it’s been a feature pretty much forever - in pre-ribbon versions of Office, it’s a ‘presenter view’ checkbox in the ‘Set Up Show’ dialog.
