Glee is nearing its end, with only 3 or so episodes left. And it has turned into a bizarre self-parody in a nearly indescribable fashion. Nonetheless, it still has occasional moments of actual emotional power, and I’m sure that the writers have been thinking about the very end for years.
I think it’s nearly certain (99.8%) that the very end of the final episode will be a big musical number. And it’s very likely (95%) that it will once again bring back all the New Direction alums… certainly Mercedes/Puck/Artie/Santana/Brittney, but possibly every single person who has ever been in the club.
So… any predictions for what the final musical number will be?
I have two guesses: One from A Chorus Line. It’s the last song of the show, and the way it is traditionally performed fits a finale perfectly, as one by one each performer comes out, takes their own bow, and then joins the ever-increasing dance that is going on. You could have little screenshots and the names of the actors and mini-clips-in-windows and so forth. And it’s a fairly well known and catchy song Shake it Off by Taylor Swift. It’s very popular right now, and Glee loves popular songs. It’s got an iconic video into which a LOT of cameos could be crammed. And the “hater’s gonna hate” message is just pure glee. Slushy-throwers gonna slush-throw
Anyone else have any predictions?
I was actually thinking, thematically, that “What I Did For Love”, also from A Chorus Line, would be kind of fantastic. But I think they’ll go with something…classicer. [EDIT: Oh, never mind. I see they’ve already done it. I’d either forgotten or didn’t know.]
Yeah, that’s very likely. At least worked into a medley. Cue the Kleenex.
(I haven’t watched the show since they moved to New York. But I’ll watch the finale.)
I would have said that… EXCEPT that they already brought that back once, I think when all the original New Directions graduated, or maybe in a Finn tribute. Will they bring it back again?
According to the Glee wiki, “Don’t Stop Believin’” has actually been performed on the show SIX times (including once by the deaf choir), so I don’t see why they should be reluctant to do it again.
Thinking of series finales featuing “Don’t Stop Believin’”, at this point I don’t think it would upset me much if Glee closed with all past and present members of New Directions having dinner at Breadsticks…then Sue walks in and there’s a sudden cut to black just before she (possibly) murders them all.
What would be best is if the show’s timeslot is taken over by a show that’s already a thing, and the cast of that show does a crossover episode where they sing this to the Glee cast.
Well, I don’t know what that song was, did anyone guess it?
It was kinda nice to see ALMOST every new direction return. The only two I didn’t spot were Marley and Rory.
But overall, a limp snoozer of an ending to a show that was once really unique and special. Sad to think what it could have been if it had stayed as edgy and daring and honest as it started out.
Google tells me it was “I Lived” by a group I’ve never heard of called One Republic. Another song by this group was featured on Glee last season; the choir that won Nationals performed “Counting Stars” (and Styx’s “Mr. Roboto”).
The second-to-last song, which Rachel performed alone, was written by Darren Criss (Blaine) especially for this episode.
I heard a few weeks back that the writers had wanted the flashback/alternate version of the pilot to be the very end of the series, which I think would have worked a bit better. The scenes from the future part seemed okay while I was watching it but I agree was not that interesting. It didn’t really have a story to speak of, and while an hour wouldn’t have been long enough to show what happened to EVERY significant character who was ever on Glee it seemed strange that we didn’t find out what Brittany and Santana were up to in 2020…or Puck and Quinn, for that matter. And the “happy endings” for Will and especially Sue seemed so far-fetched that it makes as much sense to assume that the whole episode was a dream.
That was undercut but how long ago the pilot aired. I had completely forgotten so many of the little details they referenced… plus of course so many of the actors have aged so much. Although there were some fun bits there, particularly Rachel interacting with Mercedes.
I do think it would have been much better if the last two eps were reversed. Ending with an alternative version of the pilot and “Don’t Stop Believing” would have been fantastic.
The all the dreams come true ending was just so eye rolling.
