I’m borrowing from the Clinton years, but ODS is strong stuff. I hope Obama gets a few days of “attaboy” before it starts. But I predict…
[ul]
[li]A Bush-era official (Cheney?) will go on the record claiming credit for getting bin Laden, inferring that all of the groundwork was done already.[/li][li]Any number of b-listers and reality show famewhores will be lambasted for claiming that Obama used his Muslim contacts to get bin Laden.[/li][li]Bumper stickers will appear: “It takes a terrorist to catch a terrorist.”[/li][/ul]
What do you see happening on this front?
I bet we would have “Video, or it didn’t happen” sentiments running around.
People are already claiming Osama’s been dead for years and this is mostly a lie to make the President look good.
Then there will be the usual conspiracist ravings about how we executed a peace-loving man of God who had nothing to do with that CIA operation back in September of 2001, oh and the CIA set all this up because the CIA and Osama are bestest friends and always will be so obviously… uh-huh… you know… scalar weapons… much faster… right…
Finally, the jubilation in the streets of DC and NYC is exactly the same as what happens when some poor nutcases in the Islamic world celebrate terrorist attacks, so all Americans are on a moral level with al-Qaeda and we need to stop acting like we’re, you know, human beings and stuff.
My guess:
There is no proof- no video, no body, residence destroyed, no DNA. I just didn’t happen! It’s all about getting reelected!
yeah, I found this really weird. I do think there’s something to be said for… Celebrating? that a murderer of thousands has been brought to justice. And families that lost loved ones, FDNY, the troops… They’re much closer to this and I understand their possible jubilation. But I saw an interview with some kid in the street and it did seem remarkably similar to those flag burning melees we see overseas.
Technically, he was killed, not brought to justice, although he was given the option of surrendering and standing trial.
The people in DC and NYC and so on aren’t cheering that a few hundred or a few thousand (mostly) innocents got killed. OBL was a murderer just as much as Charles Manson was, but possibly less than Al Capone was. OBL was a man who planned homicides and was involved in homicides.
Their attempt to force an equivalence here is damaging to their perception of the world, and it makes them sound like people who will always see bad in everything America and Americans do, regardless of what it is. It makes them sound like people possessed by what Orwell considered the ‘negative’ variety of nationalism:
Nationalism is damaging. My contention is that it’s possible to cheer the death of OBL without being nationalist, simply on the grounds of who OBL was as a person and what he did with his life.
Well the government was in no hurry to bury the body of Saddam Hussein’s sons when they caught them. I believe they kept those Muslim “bad guys” around for like a week right?
I believe the guy is dead, but it was ridiculous not to make some kind of firm identification from various sources, even if it meant not burying him.
We now have the whole Hitler and the Russian thing all over again.
They have DNA but that’s worthless, 'cause who knows when DNA was obtained and if it was his DNA to begin with.
They said, they tried to take him alive, but I would doubt that very much. I can see no way, they wouldn’t have shot him, even if he surrendered. It would’ve been too big a problem trying him, giving him a platform to spout off his gibberish.
As I said, I believe the guy is dead, but I guess it was easier this way and the old, “Shoot 'em dead, let God sort 'em out,” rule kind of applies
As I said in the similar GD thread: the narrative will go “Bush could have taken out Bin Laden anytime he wanted to but he understood [bullshit reason] and so restrained himself. But Obama is a publicity hound and definitely had to distract the press from [weird CT stuff] and so screwed up Bush’s perfect long term strategy just to steal the news cycle.”
If I were a CTer, I’d posit something more mundane: he did it now to ensure his lock on the Democrat nomination.
Considering gas prices where I live jumped from $3.94 to $4.04 since yesterday, I think people will be blaming him for this fueling the price hikes too.
I have already seen both of these posted by some of my friends on Facebook.
My use of the “hide” and “block” function has been extreme today.
Yep. I’ve gotten this one already. I told someone to GIS the supposed death picture. He claimed they were all faked.
That’s silly, though, and I say that as a Republican. If it was a reelection ploy, it’d “happen” next July/August/September.
As soon as I saw this, I had to go to Free Republic, just to see the reaction. The first thread, they were all, “meh, so what, big deal, we knew he was dead for years, it’s not going to change anything.” THEN as the news started showing people celebrating, they were all, USA USA!!!
Bunch of shitheads.
From what I’ve seen, all the ones that are out there right now ARE faked. The real ones haven’t leaked or been released yet.
According to this December, 2001 FOX News article, ObL has been dead for nearly a decade. You just know that the nutcases will run with that.
FOX? Nutcases? Say it ain’t so.
Here’s what I’ve seen from winger friends on Facebook so far:
- Obama didn’t know about the raid until it was already over.
- Obama cut some awful deal with Pakistan that will hurt us later.
- Obama has pissed off Pakistan and they’re going to nuke us.
- Obama has alienated his pacifist base.
- Obama is trying to take all the credit.
- Obama timed the raid for his political advantage.
- Bin Laden’s replacement will be worse.
- The timeline of the raid is confusing – something shady must be going on.
The “respectable” conservative version will be to assign all credit to the Troops ™ and be outraged that Obama or his supporters assign any credit whatsoever to the President. Ideally, they’d like “Obama claims he single-handedly killed Osama” to be the new “Al Gore invented the Internet”.
Are you saying that others will claim this, or is this your own claim?
