Predict the outcome of Trump's Canada obsession

Do it.

I had the talk with my trans son a few weeks ago. If it really gets wierd, grab your passport, get in the car, and in 30 minutes you’re over the border in Canada. Will sort it out then, and going to China is always an option. (Bat shit crazy to think China is a better option than the US, but trans are generally a nothing burger in China.)

After Trump was elected, I double checked than my son had done all the paperwork for officially changing everything for name and gender. He did it all on his own initiative. The one doc he had not changed was the Consular Report of Birth Abroad (equivalent of a US birth certificate for kids born abroad that are considered “natural born citizens” by virtue of one American citizen parent). Sent in all the paperwork around thanksgiving. Received the “updated” consular report of birth abroad with the original birth name and sex, but signed by little marco in mid February. No explanation or cover letter. Shit is getting painfully real, and I expect my son’s passport to be cancelled soon.

That doesn’t matter anymore, he’s in power and the GOP leadership is completely cowed by the MAGA cult. They can wave their money around but he has an army and a fanatic base, which beats money easily.

I never said we won’t have elections in 2026, I said the results won’t be honored if the Democrats manage to flip enough Red seat in the House to Blue seats. How? I don’t know exactly but everything I’m seeing so far tells me they will find a way.

Same thing as I said above - DJT, Johnson and Bondi will find a way to claim “Fraud!” and prevent the House from flipping Blue. No way these assholes will respect any electoral result that takes away their power. Authoritarians don’t give their power away. We are barely 3 months in and they have already run roughshod over the Constitution. It won’t get better in the next 18 months.

And I will shut up as this is veering seriously off topic in this thread.

That’s awful.

With all due respect, these are gratuitous insertions.

“How do we maximize fear of Trump, oh my fucking godddd?!?!”
“Believe X, Y, and Z.”
“We believe, we believvveee, oh my fucking godddddd!!!”

No, it’s pointing out that hard power beats soft power. The rich idiots who think they can control dictators after they get into power have a history of being wrong, often fatally; ask all those Russian oligarchs who “fell out of windows” how well their money protected them.

Oh, no disagreement, but Trump is the one who get thrown out of a window, in essence.

Very unlikely; he’s the one with the army and the cult. If he got mad at his billionaire buddies he could have them all imprisoned or killed and there’s not a thing they could do to stop him.

Vee shall see, as they say…

It seems of late that Trump has been quoted more as saying “Canada has nothing we need”. Earlier today, I saw a quote in the National post where he refers to Canada as “one of the nastiest countries”. I suspect in some months he’ll declare certain tariffs “permanent” back off some where he’s getting US heat (assuming Canada does too) and seize property owned by Canadians that are not permanent residents. Eg ‘snowbirds’.

Canada will experience job losses and inflation but we’ll get by.

Just my guess.

Trumps death would simply mean JD is president in the runup to 2028 which in my view would be worse.

He’s negging them. “You’re pretty for a fat girl”, etc.

I’ve not heard that term before but it suits. His threats and insults haven’t worked as planned so now the sour grapes come out. Picture his asinine words in the voice of Rhoda in The Bad Seed.

Learned a new word today negging he picked the wrong guy with Carney.

And no the dumpf does not have the “army”.

The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385, original at 20 Stat. 152) signed on June 18, 1878, by President Rutherford B. Hayes that limits the powers of the federal government in the use of federal military personnel to enforce domestic policies within the United States.

United States federal law ([18 U.S.C.]

Military are not required to obey an illegal order.

National Guard he could have IF his red state governors comply

The term “National Guard” generally refers to state-based military forces that can be activated for federal missions, and are part of the U.S. Army and Air Force reserve components. They are also part of the Militia of the United States, and in each state, they are headed by the state adjutant general, who reports to the state governor

As if they’d care.

…is an Act. It can be repealed, or amended, if there are enough votes in Congress.

Law isn’t magic. It doesn’t just automatically protect you, it needs to be implemented and protected itself if it’s to have any effect.

Remember the Enabling Acts? A whole lot of what the Nazis did was “legal” because they made it legal.

There are only 2’possible outcomes:

  • WWIII - US & Russia vs. NATO. (With a side of civil war) you simply cannot invade a NATO member without the rest doing something.
  • Trump pretends he never mentioned Canada.

I think the second option is 90% likely. But the 10% scares the bejezus out of me.

Yes acts can be overturned but that is just another set of hoops to get his feet tangled up in and again …“illegal orders” more legal thickets to deal with as well.

The dumpf is not making friends with vets either. Look at the push back from “4 dead in O -Hi -O” :musical_notes:.

Kent State happened over a half a century ago and was significant because the victims were white middle class kids, it’s one of the few times white boomers made any sacrifice for their beliefs, which it is why it was immortalized in song for them. People of color are gunned down at an alarming rate by the state and you never hear white boomers talk about that at all. Their solipsism is why they can’t comprehend what is happening now.

The Pentagon is being remade as a MAGA institution, much as the Nazis remade Germany’s military.

“President Donald Trump tonight began a purge of the senior ranks of the United States armed forces in an apparent effort to intimidate the military and create an officer corps personally loyal to him. The president fired General C. Q. Brown, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a remarkable move but also one that Trump and his MAGA allies signaled was coming.“
