That’s a good one.
I was always led to believe that the money people ran this country. If so, how does it benefit them for the US to become an outlaw nation?
I think we’re going to have elections in 2026 and 2028. I think those elections will be somewhat tilted towards Republicans because of gerrymandering (as the districts already are), voter disenfranchisement efforts, misinformation campaigns, and shameless Republican campaign finance violations that will be ignored. Notwithstanding this uphill fight, I think Republicans will lose the House in 2026. I think the elections in 2028 will be a lot closer but my crystal ball very slightly favors Democrats in the presidential election then too, mostly because I have little faith that the current administration will right this ship and because Trump does nothing so well as tear down people who are on his side.
It’s not impossible that elections are just thrown out willy-nilly, but if you want to prompt a civil war in America, cancelling elections is the way to get that ball rolling.
There will be elections in 2026. The Dems will flip the house. The map is tough in the Senate, so I think the Republicans keep the Senate. Congress will remain somewhat irrelevant, except the Dems can make the Administration’s life a little harder in 27 and 28, probably by impeaching Trump.
I don’t expect the 2026 elections to have much shenanigans.
The 28 POTUS election will be a whole different ballgame. That’s where we will know if the descent into dictatorship is permanent or not.
All of this means that Canada needs to stay “woke”, be aware of its surroundings. You’re not safe. Any country that flirts with dictatorship is a potential existential threat to countries around it.
My wife has UK citizenship through her Scottish mum, but our kids are not eligible. She is also entitled to French citizenship through her dad and Polish citizenship through his parents who fled Poland ahead of the Holocaust, both of which then entitle the kids to citizenship jus sanguinis. Given the current situation I am seriously considering pushing my wife to complete the process.
I should be able to accompany them as her spouse, but if the shit hits the fan I want them out of here.
This piece compares how Trump talks about Canada with how Putin speaks about Ukraine. In some cases Trump parrots Putin right down to using the same amount that America “loses” in supporting Canada that Putin claimed Russia lost in supporting Ukraine.
First part incorrect; second part correct.
We just did this, but…
Trump is not going to last long enough as president to get any of his “major dumb shit” accomplished.
Ergo, invasion achievement will NOT be unlocked. Sorry, Canadians. All the fun of unfucking Trumpian/GOP messes will be ours to enjoy.
I don’t necessarily disagree but I am curious to hear more as to why you think he won’t last.
(personally, I think his health is a lot more precarious than anyone knows and one glorious day we’ll get the headline we’re all waiting for… but he might live to be 120 just to spite me)
My wife is an actuary. The other day, she broke down the numbers on what the odds were of Trump dying in office. For a man of his age, social demographic, and wealth, it was ~30% he dies in the next four years.
Not terrible odds, but I wouldn’t hang my hopes on it happening.
He’s tanking the markets = fucking with rich people’s money = no no in GOP Land. Perhaps the only no no left.
Yeah, he looks like a dying frog. I really don’t think he can make it to the end of the year.
But regardless of whether he lives to 120 or not, he does not have the mojo to lead and do big shit at this point. Hitler was 43 when he took power in 1933. Young! Trump is dogshit dregs. Old, stupid, fading, and dying.
And those odds presume an average level of care and scrutiny for that social class and wealth, while the White House Occupant has daily interactions with multiple people who can flag health issues, and top of the line treatment, accessible at a moment’s notice, so probably less than 30% in his case.
True, but it also doesn’t account for the fact that the guy’s lived his whole life on a diet McDonalds and Diet Cokes, so that’s probably a wash.
There are different kinds of smart. He is evil smart.
Oh, in 2026 in all likelihood. We know it won’t be in days because that couldn’t be hidden. It likely won’t be this year - barring truly epic economic catastrophe or some other really epic chaos - because they have not yet manufactured enough consent or weakened the Canadian economy and/or unity.
Who, besides hardcore maggots, has any animosity toward Canada?
Noone. It’s not gonna happen. As I keep pointing out, Trump hasn’t even hinted at the idea of using military force in Canada. He talks about “they should become our 51st state”, but he’s never said anything like “They’ll join us whether they want to or not” the way he has with Greenland or Panama, and even specifically said in a press conference that he only wanted to use “economic pressure”. Trump isn’t as clever as he thinks he is and he’s not good at being coy or disguising his motives - if he was actually thinking, at all, about invading Canada, he would be saying so out loud, and he’d be bragging about how easy it would be in an attempt to convince Canada to surrender preemptively.
All of this speculation is just reading into things that aren’t there.
I learned in this thread that in every American lurks a thirst for the blood of foreigners.
I think you’re correct. I was just wondering if there has been word of many dumbasses jumping on the ‘consume Canada’ train. For instance, I don’t think I’ve heard anything about it coming out of marge green’s filthy yap, so maybe, hopefully, he hasn’t poisoned all the deplorables with this particular nonsense.
The closest I can think of is Jesse Watters making a quip to some Canadian politician (Doug Ford?) a few weeks ago that was along the lines of “I guess it’ll have to be a hostile takeover”.
Which I’d take more as a display of his being a professional troll than anything else.
