I was talking to Coworker about this summers Holliday schedule. I was complaining that this is a year we are stuck with stupid Mondays instead of Fridays for the summer days off. She thought I was insane, and that a Friday is no better than a Monday off.
I say a Friday is much better. You get to enjoy a short work week, then a long weekend. The other way you can’t really appreciate the short workweek because you know it is the longest possible time till another day off, and the week is filled with depression. Plus Friday are good and fun, and Mondays are just full of suck.
Have other people made this strong preference for Friday off?
I’ve given this a lot of thought, and have to conclude that it doesn’t matter either way. They are equally excellent days to have off. Mondays are indeed full of suck, so it’s good to have that off, yet Fridays are fun and it’s good to have a Friday off, especially if it’s a payday Friday. They’re equal to me. I’ll just have to take them both off.
If I had my druthers, I’d have Wednesday off, because then you’d never have to work more than two days in a row, given the normal M-F workweek.
Monday, because you can have a week knowing that a 3 day weekend is coming, followed by a 3 day weekend, then a short work week. With Friday off the anticipation and the actual short work week are compessed into one.
I work Tuesday through Saturday, meaning my weekend is Sunday and Monday.
Honestly, I’d rather work Sunday through Thursday, but for whatever reason, our scheduling genius has about five times more people working my shift than the other. This isn’t to say that they have all that many less people on Sundays, because plenty of other people get the even suckier shifts entailing two week days off and working BOTH weekend days.
That being said, there is something positive about having a regular week day off. I can do all sorts of business on my regular Mondays off that I would otherwise need to ask for time off to accomplish.
When I was on four day weeks, I chose Friday as my day off. It was nice, Friday being payday, and I could go out on a date with my hubby while the kids were in school. I would rather be at work on Mondays.
I picked Monday, because I hate Sunday nights and can’t sleep knowing I have to start another work week. With Mondays off, you get a bonus weekend day. Everyone is going back to work but you can sleep in and slack off all day!
One of the best schedules I ever had was 4 days on, 2 days off. So my days off cycled through all the days of the week. One week I would have Sunday Monday off, the next week Saturday Sunday, the next week Friday Saturday. It was great because I generally prefer having weekdays off, but if you want to do things with other people you need weekends off. And I could mark my calender as far in advance as I wanted and see what days off I’d have.
My schedule now is best ever, though. Every Tuesday Wednesday off, and every other weekend off. When schedules were being set up they asked everyone to submit their “dream schedule.” That’s what I submitted and got!
Fridays are great. But it seems like taking Fridays off would make Mondays that much more of a bitch. Psychologically, Mondays are awful – as far as a havetogetupandgotowork-day is concerned – a better day to have off, imo.
Monday. I travel a lot by motorcycle and the traffic is usually better on Mondays than Fridays and the rushes are more predictable and more easily planned around.
In my job Friday is the day where if someone turns up at 5 minutes before closing up and needing 3 or 4 hours of work, you cant ask the person to come back tomorrow to be helped by someone else. Any other day you can do some preliminary work and have the rest followed up tomorrow, but the weekend is too big a delay.
My experience so far is that Friday off sucks. Because Thursday’s work bleeds into it, and I almost always end up going in for at least part of the day. There are many things which people are desperate to get done before the weekend. No one is desperate to complete something first thing on Monday.
Also, my friends and family are all working on Mondays, so I might actually get to schedule the time for something I want to do instead of what they have planned for me.
Not that I’m bitter. . .
The bad side would be when Monday is a holiday - I bet you’d get ripped off in that scenario. . .
I prefer Friday. If I have Monday off, I’ve already had two days off in a row going into it so I don’t appreciate the idea that I’m not in the office as much. Friday off is better for me because I was just working four days in a row so I can appreciate having a day to relax before the weekend even hits.
Definitely Monday’s off. Friday’s the best day at work, everyone’s a bit happier and there is less work done. Why take off the best day in the week when you can take off the worst?
At my last job, I took Weds off. It never felt like I was working too much, having that day off in the middle. For the poll, I selected it doesn’t really matter. On the left hand, Mondays are emotionally traumatizing, on the right, it’s much easier to find someone to do things with Thursday evening or on Friday than it is Sunday evening or on Monday.
