Ahem . . .ROLLS ROYCE
The classiest, most beautiful car ever made.
And the robin reliant.
just kidding.
Aw, man! That Auburn boat-tail is incredible!
Acknowledging that this is largely/primarily a matter of taste, I would appreciate hearing advocates of modern 2-seaters explain why their submissions are more beautiful than that.
In other words, how about people trying to offer comparative factors, in support of their photos?
To start, IMO a car like this Auburn combines a impression of power and speed, with a sense of grace and romance which is absent from many of the modern sexy “street rockets.”
And many of the muscle cars are certainly impressive, if not intimidating. But I think the brute power they convey is somewhat more one-dimensional than the subtlety offered by the Auburn/Cord/Dusie.
Another factor in favor of older cars is that since few of us were around when they were made, they exist largely in the world of our imagination of how things once were. Which is qualitatively different from our recollections of how things actually were when muscle cars came out in our youth, or how things are now as streamlined street rockets push the limits of modern engineering. That type of romantic reminiscence is exclusive to, and tips the scales in favor of the true classics. The closest modern exotics have to that is price exclusivity, which the rare classics share as well.
But, of course, that is just MHO. I would appreciate hearing yours…
Well, since I owned 3 of them, I have to put in a vote for the Datsun 240-Z. I just love the look of them, both inside and out.
Sam Stone,
I had what (I think) was the earliest 240 left (hls3000201), it was a great car, it handled like it was on rails!.
Allow me to cast another vote (with a link) for the Jaguar xk120 http://harwood-enterprises.com/british/photos77.1.html these photo’s are the best that I could find.
unclviny
I concur.
Shoot. I was gonna say the Acura NSX.
OK, 2nd choice is Aston Martin Virage. Followed closely by Volvo V70 Wagon. (Hey, we’re allowed to be different here, right?)
Err, that’s boat tail! Sorry, as a Riv owner and lover I just couldn’t resist.
My sister is a boat tail fan, and I’m in love with the 60s models as you describe, the 63s and 64s are especially gorgeous.
Mine is a 69, silver and black similar to the 68 here in the link…

But someday, I’d love to get my hands on a 64, known as the “Forgotten Muscle Car” (though WHO could possibly forget this beauty?)…
Oh heavens!!!
[homer simpson]mmmmmmmmmmmmmm, gorgeous car…grrrrrgggllllllggggllll[/homer simpson]
I don’t really like those big oval blobs from the 30’s, and since it seems we’re descending to modern cars here’s my favorite “car-we-can-all-afford”

Course I’ve got the foglamps, blue paint, and new wheels. No “fancy” grpahics though.
IIRC the Jaguar XK120 and the Bristol mumble mumble were “influenced” by the BMW 328 - not too shabby looking itself Pic Pic
Thanks for the correction, Canvas. Those Rivieras are so ballsy and majestic. I love em. The one in my neighborhood must be a 65 or 66, because the angle of the rear window isn’t as pronounced as later years, and it doesn’t have those indent-y things on the side.
American muscle and luxury cars from the 50s and 60s are the balls. Even AMC had a nice one (in the early 70s aI think with the Challenger.
Whoops. I meant Javelin. The Challenger was Dodge. Javelins were made in the late 60’s through early 70s.
nice casdave. Might even make me rethink my choice, the Ferrari Dino 246 GT.
Don’t forget the AMX.
Just watched Victory By Design on Speedvision- Ferrari.
I would like the Ferrari 275 under my tree, please.
Here is another.
I will go now. I need to be alone with my images.
Only if you’re a 12 year old boy.
Awwww, that’s cute!!! Sort of a baby muscle car.
