Pretty sure my cats have ear mites. Advice?

I have an appointment set up for tomorrow. Just curious what’s in store for me with regards to treatment. Also how much is it likely to set me back.
I have two cats and a dog. Should I make an appointment for my dog too? He doesn’t seem to be showing any symptoms.
Thanks for any input.

The vet will prescribe ear drops. Put them in as directed, and the mites should be gone in a week.

Yeah, not very expensive as long as it’s just mites - just the exam plus fairly inexpensive ear drops.

Check your dog’s ears - ear mite build-up looks like coffee grounds in the ear canal and there may be a funky smell. Also if your dog has them he will be scratching, shaking his head, whining or pulling away when you rub the base of his ears. If no signs, he’s probably fine.

They’ll want to make sure it’s mites, and that there’s no secondary bacterial/fungal infection of the ear, so you’re looking at an exam and an ear cytology. If it’s just mites and the debris isn’t totally egregious, you probably won’t need any drops. The techs can clean the ears and apply Revolution while you’re there and you can apply the follow-up dose in two weeks. Easy-peasy. If there’s tons of debris, they’ll probably send you home with some flush to clean them out every few days. If there’s also an infection, you’re going to need drops/ointment to treat that.

How much that will cost you depends on what your vet’s pricing schedule is like and what they find on the exam. The clinic where I work, you’re looking at somewhere between $100-$175 depending on what the situation turns out to be.

It cost us $100 for the exam and one bottle of cat ear drops. Not bad. She hates them, of course. We had to put them in for 6 weeks.

$100 for a basic exam?
Holy shit. I don’t begrudge vets their dues, but I know you live in the midwest as I do, and I pay $38.00 for the visit and basic exam. Plus whatever meds or extra services.

I used to live in the midwest. I live in upstate New York now. All the Cornell grads around here drive up the rates. And plus, it’s New York, so everything is more expensive.
