Prince Philip has died

Which of his songs will Elton John butcher for the funeral. I hope it’s “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting”.

I think I Just Can’t Wait To Be King might be more likely.

Sitting here in London, I feel oddly dislocated, but that’s probably simply because the familiar broadcasting schedules have been upended, at least on the main channels, with the BBC switching all channels to a single obituary-plus-talking-heads programme. And one of the other channels seems to have dropped ads, just showing an animated version of its logo (not surprising, most of the ads in the afternoon are for funeral insurance and prepaid cremations - I’m wondering if they’ll have dropped the re-runs of Waiting for God).

That or Crocodile Rock

I remember seeing an interview with a BBC newsreader who said that one of the very first things on being hired was going out and having a black suit tailored, and then leaving that in the office, just in case. And wasn’t there a hullaballoo when the Queen Mother passed and one of the newsreaders wore a dark blue tie rather than a black one? I get the impression that there are formal etiquette rules that are expected to be followed.

(And to be honest, I’m sad that we’re not going to see the massive ceremonies that would have been held if not for covid restrictions.)

And they’ll now have to update the obits of the Queen and some of the other royal family members plus also reviewing the processes for their deaths.

There is a history program on her. I watched it on YouTube. She was fascinating!

I’m Still Standing.

Indeed! Amazing life history. And reading about the death of her daughter Cecile, Phillips sister, in a plane crash is incredibly tragic. Traveling to a wedding with her family while pregnant then giving birth on plane and it crashes, damn it’s terrible.

Sad news for the Windsors, sympathy to their loved ones and countrymen

He served his adopted country bravely and well as a naval officer during WWII. There aren’t that many left.

And he had to give up his career for his wife. He likely would have made admiral had he married anyone else.

Goodbye, Phillip of Rhodes

yes, black ties are standard. the presenter wore a red tie. red tie! i’m a bit surprized he wasn’t taken to the tower.

“I wish he’d turn the microphone off.”

Not to worry. Prince Philip is a god:

It’s mentioned in the movie Tanna (2015) – well worth watching on its own merits.

So this website’s alternative to reading a news story is offering a nine-minute long YouTube video?

it also gives one an idea of what can be expected funeral wise, and a handful of interesting facts.

Sorry, just thought it funny that a site called “Too Long, Didn’t Read News” had such a long report. Nine minutes is enough time to read quite a long written news story.

This is why I don’t understand the mania for video over the written word - who’s got the time? I actively avoid clicking on videos in news and social sites.
