that is true, the site has an amusing name. it also has a cartoon like style of illustrating.
Not being British, I’m not concerned with the official royal stuff; I’m saddened that a woman I admire has lost her husband of 74 years. Whatever you think about the Queen, the woman Elizabeth Windsor has just had a blow, and I am sorry for her.
Still, it’s less surprising than the death of Philip’s uncle, who died from an infected bite from a pet monkey.
Of all the rotten luck. Not even a decade away from the discovery of penicillin.
Re Prince Phillip’s death, I am sorry for the Queen losing her long term help mate. But she is a strong woman, the death cannot have been unanticipated and I am sure she will weather it as best one can.
Bit of a royalist for a Lib Dem. ;).
A decade and a half or so at a dinner at one of the Inns of Court, I was seated next to a elderly retired Admiral. Who it transpired had served both with Philip and later Andrew. As the evening went on he became drunker and stated it was a tragedy that both men were royals, the would have become Admirals for sure.
I have often wondered how much having to truncate his career has affected Andrews behaviour.
It’s always a bummer when a WWII veteran (and one who saw extensive operation service at that) passes away. And a Navy man, too.
Very sad for QEII. I think she’s the most fascinating woman. Knowing the man for 81 years. How can you know anyone for 81 years?! Incredible.
So who is the new Duke of Edinburgh? Does that go to Charles?
Yes, for the moment. When Charles becomes king, the title will “merge in the Crown” and be available for regrant, and the palace announced some years ago that the plan is for the title eventually to go to Charles’s younger brother Edward, currently the Earl of Wessex, who has in recent years taken over his father’s leadership role in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.
The next in line is Edward. That’s why he was only Earl of Wessex; the big title was still to come.
Prince Philip was an interesting fellow with strong views on lots of things (sometimes inartfully expressed) who devoted his life to his Queen and Country. May he rest in peace.
The current royals do everything long-term.
If he wasn’t Prince he might have made something of his life?
The Queen Mother died shortly after Princess Margaret.
Nobody should outlive their children.
I understand Charles is already Duke of Rothesay (also a Scottish title) so do we assume he won’t use the Edinburgh title?
That’s extremely generous.
I would assume probably not. Duke of Rothesay is the traditional title of the heir to the Scottish throne, the counterpart to Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall for the English throne, so he’ll probably stick with that one, and Edinburgh will only be mentioned if they need to trot out the full thing:
His Royal Highness Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, Prince of Wales, KG, KT, GCB, OM, AK, QSO, CC, PC, ADC, Earl of Chester, Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland. (cite)
The leader of the Commonwealth of Nations is called Head. Queen Elizabeth II is the monarch of only 16 of the 33 members of the Commonwealth.
“How long before the Queen can start dating again?”
I’ve read that the title Duke of Edinburgh will be passed to Prince Edward, upon his mother’s passing.
" the Palace announced the intention that Prince Edward would eventually be created Duke of Edinburgh, once that title had reverted to The Crown upon the death of both his parents.[81][c]
I genuinely hope there’s some sort of anthropological study in the coming years about how Philip’s death will affect this movement. I can’t think of a similar case in the modern era where a religion based around a living person had their god die.
Make it even stronger I suppose. Living gods are the exception, not the rule.
