So here’s what’s happening…
When created, new word docs on my laptop have suddenly, mysteriously started opening as a tiny blank page, about half normal size. New, typed letters are in miniature. (Pre-existing docs are fine. This is Word 2007, btw.) Someone (who I know very well) sent me a file yesterday that also mysteriously opened this way, and the only way to make it readable was to bump up the font to a ridiculous number, with only a few sentences per page. However, the new word docs on my computer didn’t start doing this right away.
I can’t find any options for going back to the normal default (and who would want this eentsy one anyway??) I’m SURE that some of the very smart people here have seen this before. What did you do?
It’s hard to tell from your description but my first guess would be that the zoom is messed up somehow. The first thing I would check is the page layout and make sure it is still set to standard letter size. If that looks OK then I would check the zoom and see if it got set down to something like 25% or 50%. If that’s the problem then just change the zoom to 100% or full page.
Actually, it happened because, at some recent point you (or the previous viewer) closed a doc when it was set to a view such as “page width” and you had made the page smaller to get at something else on your desktop. The settings you close with are the settings it opens with the next time you access MW.
I have to add the caveat that this is usually the case. I use Office 2010 at work and sometimes it takes a few doc openings before Word recognizes that I want different settings. I could try setting my preferences, but I don’t bother.
I am a big fan of keyboard shortcuts.
On my laptop, <ctrl><shift>z zooms to page width. Very useful instant “out” for accidental (or deliberate) zooming.
