For myself, Teppei(pronounced TEP pay) is the main character of a little known anime called BT’X. As a huge fan of the show, I like to pay homage to it whenever possible; choosing a screen name for the SDMB was a prime opportunity.
The origin of my screenname is kind of embarrassing…
Well I got this from my AOL screenname and I got my AOL screenname from my favorite stuffed animal
My first and middle names are John Benson, the same as my daddys. So for all my life I have been called JB. This is very easily shortened to Jabe. Us Americans even have to have shortened forms of initials…pathetic. I like it though.
That’s SHORTENED?!? Seems to me like “Jabe” is longer than “JB”.
Anyway, my SN… (I’ll give you the short story)…
In my high school Speech class, I took to calling myself “Overlord of Earth” when introducing myself to the audience. Eventually, I added a “Self Proclaimed-” to the front when some people questioned my authority on really being Overlord. One day, it just spontaneously hit me that I can take that whole phrase to make SPOOFE (Self Proclaimed Overlord OfEarth).
The “Bo Diddly” part came into existence when I was filling out an Internet survey. The opening to it asked for First Name, Middle Name, and Last name. I put “SPOOFE” as my first name, and without hesitation, but “Bo” as the middle name, and “Diddly” as the last name. I found out later that “Bo Diddley” was the name of an actual guy (a baseball player, I think? Hell if I know). I must have heard the name, and unconsciously brought it back just for this instance. But I like it.
The amusing saga of my moniker. I think it should be made into a movie. Action! Suspense! Romance! Well, okay, no romance going on here… but plenty of ding-dongs! Woo!
Sometimes I can obsess over the smallest details. So when I was signing up here, I knew that I could easily spend a half an hour or more constructing the “perfect” screen name. I don’t know why Snoopy popped into my head – I’m not exactly a Peanuts groupie – but it did, and I thought, fine, that’ll work, I want to get to posting.
As for the extra "o"s? I had just recently signed with Yahoo Games, and it took me about 10 tries to pick a name that had not already been taken (amazingly, spacegoat1 was no longer available). So I threw in a few extra "o"s to avoid any hassle. I think the extra "o"s add some pleasant whimsicality.
I got mine because that day I had overheard some little kid say “That’s a bunch of malarky!” I thought that was adorable, and a little more tame than my other screen names…ViciOusBitcH6969 and I_eat_boy_bands_for_Breakfast! My mother agreed
I started going by the name Badger about 20 years ago. Came from a D&D game. Used it as a handle(when they were still called handles), on BBS’s in the old 300 baud days, until present. most of my freinds call me that, even my wife calls me that to this day… just sorta stuck…ANYWAY, when I came here, it wouldn’t let me use badger, apparently there was someone who had already registered it, and was not useing it as far as I could see, so I just shortened it(bdgr).(couldnt for the life of me think of anything else to use).
um… i’m a chick, and i like racin’, and i like double-consanants so instead of chick i put chikki. in my mind the chikki part also reminds me of the dixie chicks.
in other incarnations (no, i don’t have multiple personalities, i just have so much personality that it overflows my persona) i am known as QOTU (pronounced Ko-Two) for Queen of the Universe, or as simply Lee (because it’s my middle name, and helpfully androgynous)
Sea because I’m studying marine biology and want to spend the rest of my life on a boat. Sloth because it’s my favorite critter and the lazy, sleepy, hungry animal I most resemble.
You like racing? You’re female? Well, have I got a treat for you!! If you’ve never seen it, you need to check out http://www.rubberburner.com. What a dreamboat! Truly an inspiration to men everywhere.
As for my screen name, I’m really tall (6’8"), and I’ve always had a fondness for my animal familiars, namely giraffes and great danes. (I figured I’d leave Great Dane as a hilarious pun for some Danish person.)
This is so embarrassing … mine comes from a Saturday morning TV show.
My brother and I watch a lot of cartoons and sci-fi shows, and he recently got me hooked on Transformers: Beast Machines. The robotic spider, Blackarachnia, was nicknamed “Ladybug” by one of the other characters. I thought it was cute and decided to use it here.
I think this pretty much confirms my status as a geek.
After changing my name I got some people wondering where it came from so I opened a thread on it a while back. For those of you who missed it, the name came from this Monty Python skit, as did the first part of my sig. The second part of my sig answers TubaDiva’s question in an email she sent after changing my name for me.
And if you are wondering, I used to be BratMan007. I have no story for that one. 007 is cuz I’m a James Bond fan and because I worked in the 68th Intelligence Squadron when I was in the Air Force. BratMan is cuz, well, I’m male and can be a brat.
