Problem children / punch list for fixes / TIPS AND TRICKS

Apparently they don’t if the like functionality is globally disabled. We are all becoming “Members” (TL2) simply by making a post.

Looks like I got here too late to do that. Took a xanax last night and slept past my usual 4:30 AM. I pass the baton. May that thread go down in flames by the end of 2020 (or sooner would be okay, too).

Sorry I’m so inept, but I can’t figure out how to do ANYTHING. I finally got in by signing up as a new user - Dinsdale1 instead of Dinsdale.

I thought I had changed my email, but I never got an email to my new email (and i forget how to access the old one.)

Now that I’m in here, I can’t figure out how to send private messages,

When I open a thread, I can’t figure out how to go to the end of a thread. Instead, it starts at post #1, and I have to scroll down thru however many pages/posts.

I’ve spent - I don’t want to exaggerate - at least 30 minutes (likely more) just trying to get to this point, and I’m nearing my frustration limit. Any idea what I’m doing wrong, and how I might readily get to some point where I can at least limp along?

Damn - I just found that tutorial. Do I really have to read through that and take all those steps just to get to something approximating the old boards? Because if so, that might just be enough to drive me away after 2 decades.

Again, I apologize for being so inept. And likely a tad cranky this a.m. and my blasted work computer too a freaking solid HOUR to let me sign in today! :frowning:

I’d check your junk mail. All the mail from Straight Dope is going into my junk folder.

To send a message click on someone’s name, then “message”.

To go to the end of the thread - click or drag the scrollbar on the right of the posts.

Ignore list won’t work. I select a user and a timeframe and I get an error message saying “Please select a timeframe” no matter which one I select.

Password setting is a little confusing. When I attempted to log on with my previous password, it was declined. I hit the “password reset” and typed in my old password and it was accepted. Then I went to my profile page and found the message from TubaDiva about the “acceptable password” rules. My old password didn’t satisfy all of them, but still let me in. So I changed it again, but you might want to decide exactly what the password standards are & make the instructions match them.

My heartfelt thanks to TubaDiva and all the mods and admins for shepherding through this change. I sure hope it helps!

Not sure what the best way is to report a closed thread, but, at a glance, this one and this one have lock icons.

Not a big deal - but links used to open in a new tab/window, but no longer do (and I liked it). Not a big deal to center click to make it happen, but another reflex/instinct to retrain (and I’m old, damn it).

Ignoring people via clicking on the user works. Just not when I try to enter a user on my Preferences. Hmmm.

Well, they appear to be gone. :man_shrugging:

I liked having them around, but I understand that’s been s minority view around here.

Okay, here is the problem I couldn’t post during the Weird 50 Character event:

On Firefox/Android, highlighting a word in the first (possibly more) line pops up an unmovable menu that makes it impossible to access the formatting bar.

On Discourse, yes. On some other boards, likes aren’t used that way.

But that requires one to actually care about their trust level.

There is a check mark in your preferences to open external links in a new tab.

Missing Polls is the biggest issue I’ve noticed so far.

The new table feature is great. Big improvement over the old board.

But why is the link displaying the post I’m linking too?

It looks like all of the forums were moved out of the “main” folder and into their own categories, which I’m sure is important for organization but actually ends up making the front page uglier. :frowning:

Here’s what it looked like before, with one of the more minimal themes: homepage hosted at ImgBB — ImgBB

Nice and clean, with the most recent topics for each category.

Now the front page is cluttered with icons and the sidebar the most recent topics across all boards. Is there any way for me to get back to something like the image linked above?

Once the board is back to its normal hum, an unfiltered “most recent posts” sidebar is going to be 75% thread games.

I logged in with a password last night, and I’ve been logged in ever since. So maybe that’s the way to do it.

But also maybe you don’t get given a choice? I don’t remember seeing one – though you can log out on purpose.

Was that on purpose?

I disagree, I think this makes the front page look better. I want my list of forums categories!
