Professions not represented on the Dope?

Don’t say that to a woman who’s had a mastectomy!

I meant the pictures! I’m the smart-ass who when people say “Look at the cows” and we’re passing a ranch, not a dairy, I have to say they are more likely to be steers and heifers.

Ah the requisite smart-ass. I’ve had that job too!

inkleberry and Ensign Edison (both very interesting “ask the phone psychic” threads)

Wow, Somehow I always figure I am overlooked since I have started lurking more than posting.

Thanks for remembering me Missy…

I wouldn’t have thought that us technical writers counted as unusual given that we’ve got a good chunk of the computer industry represented here.

I think **gabriela ** quit posting here, though – at least, I haven’t seen her since she gafiated several months ago. Which is a crying shame, since I loved her stories.

Work is ok, but the pay sucks…

I seem to be the resident lighter-than-air (balloon) pilot, as well as one of the (rather large) group of fixed-wing pilots.

Do we have a full-time archaeologist? I’ve never spotted one… And if any non-archeology related board has one, they’ll be here.

I went through the U.S. Navy nuclear power training program and supervised the operation of a nuclear reactor on a submarine for three years.

Hmmm… way back when picked strawberries, cleared fire trail (“three feet wide and down to mineral earth”), split firewood, and worked in the family boat works as a welder.
Was sworn in as a state policeman for one graveyard shift (Halloween at the state capitol, conveniently close to a small university. I had the hat and uniform jacket and a big flashlight. I successfully guarded several buildings and prevented hooligans from putting soap or jello into the state fountains.)

Radio in multiple functions (DJ, news, ad sales, sales manager, station manager, and more recently voice talent on retainer) off and on for 40 years. We are well-represented here, especially if you count college station experience.

Newspaper (where, yes, I have written many obituaries, including a front-page obit two weeks ago for a leading local citizen and good friend) in almost as many aspects as the radio gigs. I’ve been a darkroom technician — back when there were darkrooms — ad salesman, ad director, columnist, editorial writer, editorial cartoonist, photographer, reporter and editor. This category is also well-represented here.

EMT-1 Ambulance

Amusement Park Operations

Supply Chain Analyst

Originally, the purpose of the boards that are often known as snark boards was to discuss topics that couldn’t be mentioned on the dope. On one of these boards, a dope member who wished to remain anonymous agreed to answer questions about her former job as a Call Girl. It was very enlightening.

I’ve done a lot of stuff. I’ve delivered phone books, scrubbed toilets, worked a camping site off-season, worked an amusement park, been a TA, done general temp work, managed a small cafe, waitressed, worked a call center (call in not call out), been a ‘booth babe’, worked as a maid, worked as a cook, modeled, worked in a comic book shop, worked at Kmart in a bunch of positions, did data entry, and a bunch of other stuff that I am forgetting right now.

There was a guy a while back who said “you can see me on page XX of the new National Geographic, they took a picture of a dig I’m participating in.” I don’t remember who it was, though, so I can’t say whether he’s still around.

My summer job for the past few years has been a park ranger. I’ve also worked as a warehouse labourer and labourer on a golf course.

Howsabout the grandson, great-grandson, and great-great-grandson of undertakers? My pop, if he ever posted here, could tell you what it was like to live in a funeral home in the 40’s and 50’s.

I appear to be the only physical oceanographer around here. Perhaps, the only oceanographer.

I may be the only HS Chemistry/Physics/Earth Science teacher, but I seriously doubt it.
And as far as the astronaut goes, I can’t believe that we at least don’t have someone from JPL, Ames, etc, even if there’s no actual ‘space-going-person’.

There’s one out on the central coast of Calif. (north of Santa Barbara), but I can’t remember who – OlGaffer? Duffer? someone with an “ffer,” IIRC.

Farm hand on a dairy farm through high school
Radio personality
Radio advertising salesperson
Hog Buyer
Swine Semen Salesperson (sales manager for a genetics company sounds more impressive, but ‘semen sales’ usually generates more interest)

Oh, and landlord overlaps those last couple.

I can’t help but ask. Do you live in Iowa?

Either that or Vegas.

Nope. Minnesota. Lots of customers in IA though.
