Project Runway - Final Three (Unboxed Spoilers in OP)

I guess I just got tired of Kara’s attitude in the last episode. Why fight with Wendy? She was no threat. What could she possibly do but make it a 2 person contest? While Jay said some negative things he also tried to be a fair person and I admire that tremendously. He deserved to win, hands down.

“I hope Kara Saun didn’t sell her soul for those shoes, because she might need it someday.”

Yea Jay! I’m glad he won. Although he never won a challenge, he was second almost every time. That shows a great deal of versatility and consistency. Jay certainly deserved the win. His collection was diverse but held a common theme. I love the way he mixes textures.

It was kinda strange when Wendy’s mother told him he was her and her friends’ favorite and asked him to go smoke with her. I thought, “either she recoginizes Wendy as the conniving bitch she is and doesn’t mind that Jay has pointed that out repeatedly or she’s going to push him over the ledge.” Apparently she thought Jay was just being honest.

I was surprised at Kara Saun’s collection. It was repetitive and not as original as her designs during the challenges. I wonder if that is why she’s a costume designer. Give her a general idea of what you want and she’s terrific. But apparently she lacks the originality needed to have your own label. Although, I must say I loved a couple of the coats.

I can’t believe she didn’t see why the shoe thing was cheating. The sense of entitlement she showed when confronted about $15 custom-made shoes vs the cheap off the shelf or out of Michael Kors’ (or was it Tim’s) Big Box 'o Shoes was astounding. The producers were nice to her to let her use them and just tell the judges not to consider the shoes in evaluating her collection. They should have made her scramble to get shoes from the Big Box 'o Shoes or some outlet like the other two did. I wonder if that incident cost her at the end.

What can you say about Wendy? She never really had a chance with her “collection”. It seems she just threw a bunch of different designs together, including that see-through thing, just to show she was versatile. Instead it looked disorganized and lacked a signature characteristic look. It seems she was trying to prove she could be edgy but ended up looking confused.

This episode really gave some insight into Wendy’s behavior throughout the show. She thought she was on Survivor. Hello? It was a competition. You don’t get to form alliances and vote someone off the island. She really played it like it was a game. The others viewed it as a true competition. She really tried to win the sympathy vote by mentioned she was a “mother” and picked up her daughter to carry her down the runway.

I loved Jay saying, “Wendy’s probably crying in the elevator” and cut to Wendy, crying in the elevator. Damn. Between that and her most intense bitchface in the studio, I was amazed she didn’t go completely off the deep end.

I was also surprised that Kara Saun was unable to understand that her shoes were in violation of the contract. What part of “gratis” was she not getting?

I think Jay deserved the win. His collection had personality and distinction and really great color and texture. He was like a softer Alexander McQueen, or something.

And I love Parker Posey, but that hair was a total rat’s nest.

I doubt the shoes would have changed the outcome, whether they were allowed to be considered or not. I think the reason she kept them in the show was because she was hoping they would influence the judges decisions, even if they weren’t supposed to consider them. I also thought they should have been thrown out entirely. Even with the “designer” shoes, I still liked Jay’s designs better. They were very “Jay” while Kara’s seemed to be more generic. That white dress was totally Gucci - she claimed to have been making stuff like that for years, but so has Gucci! As a designer, she should have realized that, and been able to defend her idea a little better.

She had this attitude that she was a “real” designer and the others were not, because she was able to get the shoes made.

I read an article about the show in the NYTimes and they said that at the end of the show there is a disclaimer that basically says, we aren’t just judging on design talent. In other words, people were kept in the show because they caused drama.

I really liked the idea of the show as it was based on talent and not say, eating worms, but that kind of let me down.

I’m glad Jay won though.

Every time the cut to her, I was singing Mr. Burns’ song from the Simpsons ‘101 Dalmatians’ spoof:

See my loafers, former gophers / see the poodle on my noodle…

BWWWWWWWahahahahah – forgotten all about that rendition of the song from miiiisssssster Burns!

It was a definite guilty pleasure for me, but I think I gained some knowledge about fashion design through the show.

Also, since I didn’t watch it religiously, maybe I missed some earlier Kara Saun freak outs–but I was completely surprised by her gettin’ in Wendy’s face and completely blanking about the shoes. I know Wency was super-bitcho, but didn’t expect that from what I had seen of KS. Makes me wonder what else (if anything) they cut of KS during the previous segments.

Finally, Parker Posey seemed like such a “gift” in the Jay department; she definitely tipped me over the edge into thinking Jay would get it.

There must have been some sound difficulties during the runway show because I heard (and loved) Kara’s music and the applause as well as Wendy’s but during Jay’s show I could only hear the music but no applause. I got worried that no one was responding to Jay’s collection until I saw some hands moving in the background. Maybe it was an attempt to ramp up the drama.

And now Katriona has me singing, “See my vest! See my vest! Seeeeeee myyyyy vesttttttt!”

The real problem, for me, with shows like this is that they really aren’t in the business of choosing on talent alone. I mean, i’m really glad that Jay won, and i think he has a ton of talent. I’m just talking about the show as a whole.

As some people have already pointed out, there is a disclaimer at the end saying that each week’s winner is chosen based on the judges opinions and consultation between judges and producers. Also, and more importantly for me, there is very little reward for consistency. Personally, i thought that Wendy’s final show stuff was pretty damn good, but the fact is that Austin was consistently better than her throughout the competition. He just happened to mess up on the wrong week.

I had been cheering for Kara Saun for quite a while, but i really lost a lot of respect for her on the last show. Her attitude to Wendy was really a bit silly, and she just didn’t seem to understand the whole issue with the shoes. Personally, like other people, i thought she was lucky to be able to use them at all, and, to tell you the truth, i think that even if the shoes were counted in the judging, her final collection just wasn’t as good as Jay’s. It was nowhere near as interesting as the stuff that she did during some of the earlier weeks.

One final note: i am a violent critic of most reality shows, and i never watch them if i can help it. I sat down to watch this one with my wife one night, and i got hooked. I have no artistic or creative talent, and i know nothing about fashion, but to watch those people do the amazing things they did in such a short time each week was really quite awe-inspiring. That level of creativity and skills is amazing, and it’s nice to see a reality show where actual talent plays a role.

I was amazed at how much this show drew me in. I was really excited to see Jay win. That quilted long coat he made was absolutely stunning. I’m wondering if a second season of PR can even come close to the magic of the first one though.

Before this thread vanishes into the SDMB …What? It did? Oh…

Well I am not afraid to ressurect a thread if necessary! Anyway, I just wanted to thank everyone for some fun times in appreciation of a fun and mostly intelligent show. I can’t wait to see how they handle Season Two!

In the meantime, anybody wanna join me for America’s Next Top Model to hold us over? Sorry, I was down with strep this weekend and watched an ANTM marathon in a druggy/sick haze and was entertained. What can I say? I was sick!
