This is one of the episodes where I’m clearly out of the fashion mindset.
I liked the blue wee-wee pad dress. It wasn’t a win or a top 3, but I found it to be a generally ok dress. Somewhere in the middle of the pack. I was kind of surprised when it got called to be the bottom 3. And I liked it way more than either the birdseed or Oliver’s dress. In fact, I thought Oliver was supposed to be one of the bottom 3 when they first asked for his model to join. It was ill fitting, ugly, a blah set of colors, and he made it out of material. And he did stupid things to his model’s hair & makeup. I also don’t see a difference between what he did and what the red haired woman who was in the bottom 3 did. They made the same dress, same shape (except one had cap sleeves, which I hate), same basic idea. I don’t see how you can like one and dislike the other.
Oliver’s accent is so so so put on! He said he was born in Columbus Ohio, then left home at 16 to go to London and then travel the world! What is he 21? That’s five years to ‘perfect’ that!
Mr.Birdseed’s dress looked awesome, from a distance it was difficult to see it was seeds. Nina wasn’t happy with the length.
Oliver is pretentious and seems to have the judges and his fellow competitors buffaloed with his “sophistication”. His garment looked like something Ayla the cavegirl would wear, and not in a good “having sex all over the plains” kind of way.
I loved the look of the birdseed dress, although I suppose it was basically a muslin sheathe with the birdseed glued on. And, to be honest, I liked the brown and orange outfit better than the cavegirl one.
Someone upstream said that watching the show on a good TV made the judges’ decision seems more rational. However I watched it on the internet and that blouse looked like a shapeless mass of tacky imitation sheep skin.
The birdseed dress was fun, with a lovely high tight collar.
So, what did we think of last night’s episode? Personally I HATED the rust-and-turquise thing with the jiffy-pop hairdo and was shocked – shocked!! that it was in the top 3. I actually thought Bert and whats-his-name’s mostrosity was better.
Interesting that they gave the designers what was essentially a circus-like challenge and then criticized them for being too costumey. There was a floaty blue thing in there wasn’t too bad either, but the judges didn’t like it.
That said, IMHO the right one was sent home. It was way past her bedtime.
I hated the blouse, but I can’t really argue with it being in the top 3. The pants were beautifully done, and they put a lot more thought and effort into it than the other teams. Their fabric choice was terribly challenging, especially considering the time constraints–just making those pants that well out of that material in that amount of time would be enough to keep them safe, no matter how awful the blouse was.
And as much as I hated it and the color combination, I see what they were going for with the blouse and like the concept. I have to respect that they actually tried to balance out the stilts and make the thing more proportional and normal looking, instead of wussing out and making something that looks like someone grabbed a normal model wearing a normal dress and stretched her legs way out. And I think the judges respected that too.
My husband kept telling me Falafel’s going home during the entire episode.
I would have sent Bryce instead because he’s been in the bottom twice so far. But I would have sent him home last week for that ugly napkin skirt. Falafel er Fallene simply lacked confidence. You can’t be a designer without it. She was always going to be early cannon fodder anyway.
I liked the a-symmetric striped jacket. I was surprised it didn’t make the top three.
I found it horribly unfair that they gav 1.5 hours for hair and make-up, then counted points off for a bad hair style. What were they supposed to do, send her back for a 3.5 minute re-do?
Bert is a bully, and a whiner and really just mean and self-centered. I expected to like him, but no. I’ll be interested to see if he finds something he actually wants to do before he gets sent home.
That Marilyn McCoo nipple top was atrocious. Before it was even made we were making fun of the fabric. Then it was down the runaway and we thought “no way are those tata bumps work appropriate”. Then it won.
I want to have them dress Michael Kors for next year’s Project Runway.
It’s kind of obvious that some of them have never had a job outside of “fashion designer” or even seen people with jobs based on what they thought was work appropriate clothing. Because some of that stuff (green dress with the cutouts, I’m looking at you) isn’t work appropriate anywhere. And a lot of them didn’t seem to understand that while you don’t want to dress a 40-year-old like she’s 80, you don’t want to dress her like she’s 18 either.
I also wish that they’d had Nina at Mood rather than walking around later. When she wanders in and says “I hate that fabric” there’s not much the designers can do. It’s not like they can go back and get more. I didn’t really love any of the outfits, but I can see why the winner won and why the loser went home.
I liked the winning outfit, and after it was chosen as a finalist I was pretty sure it was the winner.
The little black dress with the shoulder flaps was fine, but ultimately just another LBD.
Another finalist had a bare back that I had trouble imaging Ms. Garcia wanting to wear to the office, or anywhere really. Not appropriate for her age and position.
