All of the contestants bore me, but Josh is a bully. A seriously deranged bully.
I thought Viktor’s gown was gross. I still think it said ‘cow’.

Josh is an asshole and a bully, and Bert is not much better. The only difference is he’s not as loud. And I totally think Josh’s tears were just acting for the camera.
That long dress should have won. That was stunning! I would love to wear that!
Count me as another one who didn’t think Anya deserved the win. I would have voted for Viktor’s dress. I liked Olivier’s jacket, but the color really didn’t go very well with the pants.
Josh is a Grade A asshole, but he also has quite a few enablers in that group, people who don’t call him on his shit, or actively seem to encourage him and conspire with him. This season seems to have a more clique-ish dynamic than previous years, and there are a few people who constantly speak to each other as if no-one else is there, even when they’re supposed to be working together on a group challenge.
I thought Olivier’s was nowhere near as well-tailored as the judges. It was well-made, but I thought it was floppy around the boobs. It should’ve been taken in a bit more.
I loved Victor’s dress. I thought it was beautiful and moved well. I can’t even remember what Anya’s outfit looked like. I think that’s pretty telling.
StG
O.M.G. So I watched it again last night. If you slow down the beginning, when they are watching Ms. Johnson’s video, you will see the exact dress that Anya created walking down the runway. The only difference is that the sleeves are slightly detached, so that there’s an inch or so of skin showing between the shoulder and the arm. I can’t believe none of the other designers caught it.
For the third straight week Tim looks like he’s about to cry; like seriously heartbroken. And not just at the end, but whenever he walks into the workroom. Does anybody know what’s up with that?
Have I mentioned yet that I hate Josh? Because I really do. He totally tanked his team, and everything there would have been better if his behavior had been better. While I understand the concept of judging each designer by their work, in a team challenge, a negative effect across the board should also come into play.
Josh made a snipey comment about how he would be designing his Bryant Park work all by his lonesome. Does he not realize that in order to make a career he will actually have to interact with others? Ms. Johnson did make that point the night before. (What the heck is her name again?!?)
As always with these shows (Top Chef and others too) I think folks forget that it’s essentially your life-long job interview. I would not only never hire Josh, I would never wear his clothes or invest in a company that employed him. That’s the level of damage that he’s doing to himself. And I highly doubt that I am alone in this.
Nina definitely seems to be in on the Josh hate, so I’m looking forward to next week!
Viktor and Kimberley completely outshine the rest IMO. They are just on a different level. Viktor’s gown was stunning, and I thought he should have won.
I greatly enjoyed watching Bert stand up to Josh though. He got a point or two with me, even if he did wait for the bully to attack him personally, at least he stood his ground.
The collections are up at TLo. I love Kimberley’s! And as much as I hate to say it, Bert’s is really quite good. But then I’m a fashion fogey myself. LOL!
Olivier’s is beyond awful. It’s like he is trying to make his models look obese. There’s one in particular where the flesh-toned leather skirt looks like elephantine hips. ERgh! Viktor’s was very disappointing. Especially the dress with the full-body happy trail print. WTF?!?
Betsey Johnson?
I miss Mondo.
I think Vicktor was channeling Mondo in his runway getup.
It was very well tailored but the model had no tits. Not much cleavage to show off.
I thought Anya and Anthony R were more Mondo-y. But was it just me, or did Team Chaos color-coordinate their outfits for the judging?
edit: Do you mean his model or him?
I really, really don’t understand the hate for that Cheerleader dress. I thought it was damn cute, and the woman was just so happy to have it! I agree that that pink thing was the loser of the night, but my second-favorite was that cheerleader dress. I thought it was very nice. Favorite, of course, was Anya’s.
Olivier needs a good smacking. Perhaps a butt-kicking too. I can’t wait until he gets into the real world and finds out that Real Women Have Curves. My gods, the horror on his face when he talked about a woman having boobs! AND his revulsion when the model had the GALL to talk back to him! I think his life has been WAY too sheltered, and he needs to spend a month or two in Charlston doing pageant dresses. He really pissed me off.
-I didn’t have a problem with the cheerleader dress either. It was done tastefully, well tailored, and fit her well.
-Victor’s was decent but when he mentioned she was a lawyer I thought it was in no way something she could wear to the office.
Ditto to both of the previous. I liked Anya’s, too. Actually I tend to just like when they make flowy things. The pink dress was a horror.
Olivier needs to be slapped upside the head a couple of times or three. He wants to be left alone to design women’s clothes, but he wants them flat-chested only? Hey, you want flat chested, maybe you should consider menswear. And he doesn’t want to be bothered by all these pesky customers who keep telling him what they want? Somehow I think this is not going to be a problem for him in the real world. Mopey little twit.
Fun episode, and well judged.
It was interesting to see the “horror of boobs” comments, but for me the “horror of menswear” comments were equally interesting. I had no idea that designers (at least male designers) didn’t need to have basic competence with male fashion. It seemed that everyone was gobsmacked by the notion of making clothes for men.
Beyond that, the Real World interactions between picky, conventional clients and trained designers was interesting to see. Especially when the designer was outnumbered 2 to 1.
And of course, there was some comedy with the men describing how the designers should clothe the women.
My knowledge of fashion design comes only from Project Runway, so I’m curious why they are so reluctant to make menswear? Are there different technical skills involved, or is it the different aesthetics that make it so troubling for them?
I’m not a fashion guy either; my guess is that men’s fashion doesn’t have 10% of the potential for creativity as female fashion. Fit, tailoring and fabric are much more important than the concept.
If you want something as eye-catching as feminine fashion -that would still be appealing to mainstream hetero tastes- you’re looking at movie costumes or sports uniforms.
But again, it’s not something I know about.
There aren’t a lot of places to go with menswear. Trousers, shirts, suit jackets, maybe shoes. And not too bright. Not too froofy. Not too “out there”. Boring, in other words.
Women’s fashion is wide open, really. Short of nudity, you can pretty much dress up a woman in anything…shape is open, color is open, components are open, there are about a gazillion more possible accessories than men’s fashion has. You have skirts, dresses, gowns, blouses, sweaters, pants, scarves, hats, jewelry, hairstyles, bags, hundreds of types of shoes…even women’s underwear have more variety and sometimes can even be part of the design tastefully.
Bottom line, men’s fashion is boring and restrictive, while women’s fashion is wide open.
I think part of the horror is the lack of time. If you’ve got 14 hours to turn out something amazing and creative, it really helps if the model is the same 5’ 10" size 3 stick you’ve been working with for the last four weeks. “Normal” women are really unpredictable in size, height, shape and taste. I think you’d se more enthusiasm if they were given 3 days any time they’re not using their usual models.
I really hate to say it, but I loved the dress Josh made. ::spit, spit, spit:: “I expect my coffee to be ready when I get back” or whatever it was. I think he may be an actual sociopath.
Loved Anya’s dress. She and Kimberley are my two favorites. I hope Kimberley wins though, there’s something so fresh about her designs.
Re: menswear - how many times have we heard a designer say “I’ve never made pants” ? It makes me want to demand a menswear challenge each season. “I like to make dresses” should not be enough to qualify you for a design competition. Or maybe there just really is this dearth of skill out there. It’s definitely not like Top Chef where the skill level keeps going up and up.
Much more peaceful this week. I actually enjoyed watching it.
Prediction: Bert is next to go.
I find myself increasingly curious about Olivier’s diagnosis. This ain’t normal.
Heidi kept confusing me with her talk of the cheerleader dress being something old women wear. I have never seen an old woman wear a cheerleader outfit before. Maybe they do that in Germany?
My theory: Men’s clothing is all about the tailoring. It’s not “out there” like women’s clothing. You can be a good tailor, but that doesn’t mean you’re a good designer. But you do need tailoring talent to pull off any kind of menswear.
I don’t get the love re Anya’s one-sleeved wonder. Sure, she has a knack for design and picking out great patterns. I like things to have either two sleeves or no sleeves. I just don’t get it other than “it’s something we haven’t seen”, as Heidi, I think, said?
Josh [sub]@#@^#@#^[/sub]…OK, you deserved the win. You sew impeccably and, in general, I’m drawn to your aesthetic. That dress was adorable!
Please step it up, Bert. I’m still in your corner.
I was a cheerleader a very long time ago. Our uniforms were a cousin to that dress.
It made me think of one of those tap dancing groups for the elderly. Those ladies are astoundingly good.
