Protester Climbs Statue of Liberty, Forces Evacuation

Sure seemed to get your attention. The Left can’t stand it when some one points out their modus operandi. Sometimes the truth hurts. Were you triggered by the words? Need to take a break in your safe space?

Suppose you tell me exactly how the comment didn’t add to the discussion and how your comment did.

Or maybe you could ask the Mods to delete my post. Censorship, another way the Left tries to “win”.

For the record, while I disagree with Miller, I do not support this above or Mangosteen’s prior post.

I have been involved in protests. I have discussed protests with no less a protester than Pete Seeger* (OK, only once, 21 years ago). I really feel protests need to be done peacefully and lawfully or brought to the feet of the offenders. To stop a polluting incinerator we protested at GE, Trenton and the county seat, we did not stop traffic to Sandy Hook on a nice summer day. We did put up signs and held a variety of events to raise awareness of the dangers of the proposed incinerator.

This is a very important issue, even if you don’t care about the plight of these kids, at least think about how godawful it makes the US look. We are wearing the black hats with Trump and his toadies. This is nasty stuff going on. Indian relocation, Japanese interment type shit. It looks bad because it is bad. No excuses. We have to fix this. But this protest was more a look at me protest than anything useful. The wrong people had to suffer for Trumps bullshit. Make his cronies and supporters suffer.

It’s a government park. She was protesting a government policy. So… yeah, she’s already taking the protest to those behind it.

But that aside, your suggestion here is dumb for two different reason. First, a protest that doesn’t disrupt anyone’s day is a waste of a protest. As long as people think, “That shit at the border doesn’t affect me, personally,” they’re not going to act. It’s when protests start disrupting people’s day-to-day lives - when they can’t go about their normal business without someone shoving these issues in their face - that’s when shit gets done.

Second, literally all of your alternate suggestions also “fuck” with innocent people! You think Donald Trump is the only guy who lives at Trump tower? You think the businesses next to Trump properties really want a bunch of protesters blocking access to their stores?

And, fuck it, I’ll throw in a bonus reason, too: all of those places already receive regular protests. This woman shows up at any of those places, no news service is going to notice. “Another protest at an ICE facility” is barely news. This woman got on the front of every major news publication yesterday. She got her message out to millions and millions of people, an order of magnitude more than the people she inconvenienced by shutting down Ellis Island.

I can believe that. People worry about all kinds of inane things. Including things that make them feel important and significant.

Most people don’t regard getting shot or blown up as inane. The usual response isn’t feeling important or significant either.

Which gives people an excuse for pretending that there is a suggestion that somebody will get shot or blown up. People act on all kinds of inane beliefs, including when it makes them feel important to do so.

The 2014 photos taken of kids in cages during the Obama presidency clearly show this situation did not start with Trump. Were you just as outraged in 2014 at President Obama as you are outraged at President Trump today? Oh, you didn’t hear about it? You mean the media didn’t make a big deal about so they could protect Obama?

Cite please? Also how many kids? Was it the same circumstances?

Either way it should be stopped now that the light of day is shining on this evil shit.

It wasn’t remotely the same circumstances.

You remember that huge crisis under Obama, with thousands of unaccompanied minors crossing the border? That’s where most of the “Obama put kids in cages too!” bullshit comes from. Yeah, Obama didn’t just let thousands of migrant children loose on the streets with no support, which means they had to be housed somewhere. And the flood overwhelmed the systems in much the same way they’re currently overwhelmed, except that the current situation is the result of a deliberate policy instituted by the current administration, whereas under Obama, it was the result of political instability in Central and South America. This Vox article is a pretty good summary.

Obama’s immigration policy wasn’t perfect, by any means - the indefinite family detention policy Trump’s trying to implement now was originally an Obama-era idea, but was struck down by the courts - but it was a far cry from the deliberate heartlessness and cruelty on display from the current administration.

There might have been tourists there who only get their “news” from Faux, and were quite unaware of what was happening at our border. (They might have even thought that a fucking wall was under construction.) The inconvenient protest might have informed them in a way that their lying cable tv information source would never have done.

Thank you, good summary, though I have to take it with a grain of salt. Vox is actually a liberal leaning news source isn’t it? I’ll look for something from NPR, NY Times or BBC news, I trust those sources the most to be fact based and objective.

I was struck in **Mangosteen’s **posts, that he feels the media failed to report this and yet somehow Fox also missed a chance to show Obama in such a bad light. That struck me immediately as unlikely in the extreme that what he posted was factual. I believe he has been misled.

Not to mention that, if one happens to search around a bit, I believe one will find that most of those unaccompanied minors referenced above were teenagers, as opposed to the collection of preteens and toddlers that our MAGA administration has been forcibly separating from their parents. One would think it obvious that there is a significant difference in the abilities of these different age groups to comprehend and adjust to their respective situations. Well, it should be.

This.

There should have been one cop keeping an eye on her, to arrest her for trespassing, when she climbs down. By making a great big spectacle of it, the authorities have lend HUGE publicity to her cause, in effect promoting the idea that protesters use similar stunts in future.

I like this response. I also believe that nothing will ever change in America until we are all significantly, personally impacted in some way.
