PS2 Equivalent of Morrowind?

I love Morrowind. Unfortunatly, it is almost unplayable on my computer. I could play all day and not make it to the next town. I know it is on X-Box, but unfortunatly I have PS2 and not X Box.

I don’t regret getting Ps2 instead if X Box. The better hardware isn’t so crucial to me, I think the graphics are damn good on the PS2 and the selection leaves X Box in the dust.

But, I’d still like a Morrowind-esque game. I have Final Fantasy: X and It is ok, but it is so linear and so video-oriented. And I also don’t really like the concept of a turn-based RPG. I’d really like an open-ended game like 'wind, where you can do whatever you want, with one general idea: develop your character.

I’ve heard that Everquest is coming out on PS2 in a few weeks. I probably wouldn’t pay a monthly fee (I don’t know if it actually will I’m guessing). I’d be satisfied with a single player RPG like Morrowind.

So, any suggestions?

It’s not so much that there aren’t many games like Morrowind out for consoles, it’s that there aren’t many games like Morrowind at all. Every single-player RPG I’ve seen (granted, I wasn’t a big fan of them until Diablo) is very linear and story-based; the most customization you could do would be for a single character’s skills or deciding who was in your party.

The Final Fantasy series is pretty much the standard for console RPG’s, so they’re pretty much all story-driven with turn-based combat.

Suikoden 3 is my favorite of the current batch of RPG’s, but it’s linear (albeit with three branching storylines) and it has turn-based combat. It does have a ton of characters, though, and it does feel a little bit more like you’re driving the story and your decisions are making a difference.

Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance is all real-time combat, but it’s also linear and it’s pretty shallow. It’s similar to Diablo for the PC; it’s mostly about going through dungeons, killing stuff, and buying better weapons, armor, and character upgrades.

Although it sounds weird, the closest PS2 game I can think of to the open-ended Morrowind is the Grand Theft Auto series. Obviously, though, they’re very different games.

Back to the Xbox, I have to believe that open-ended games are a little easier on that machine just because there’s more memory available. 64MB gives you a lot more leeway in what you can show to the player than the 8MB on a PS2. Another RPG called Fable is in the works for the Xbox; its main selling point is that it’s supposedly completely open-ended. Remains to be seen how well they pull it off…

Nitpick: The PS2 has 32MB of RAM, not 8.

Whoops! That’s more than a nitpick; that’s a significant error. Which one had 8MB? The PSX? In any case, whenever the topic of porting something over to the PS2 comes up, there’s always much wailing and gnashing of teeth because there’s just not enough memory to go around.

Like the man said, there aren’t many RPGs out there at all like Morrowind. The only ones close are Fallout and Fallout 2 (the two best CRPG’s EVER, IMO). Sorry, man, you are out of luck with a PS2.

The PS2, but that’s its video RAM, if I recall correctly. It was 32 MB of general system RAM.

Besides, Splanky, Morrowind is FAR better on the PC than on the Xbox, anyway. Drop the bucks! Get a better computer! You deserve it! And Morrowind Plugins are so sweet…

Yep, Morrowind is much better on the PC where you can a) apply the two patches which clean up a lot of bugs, b) use the Construction Set and the tons of plugins and c) add Tribunal so that the jounal actually becomes useful.
