My latest console is a PS4. Having played a bit of Destiny I’m reminded of how much I liked the core gameplay of Halo. The mobs of easy prey with some more intelligent and stronger foes mixed in, the slow projectile speed of some weapons, the slightly unrealistic physics, and so on.
Are there any single player PS4 games that are similar? Destiny is ok, but I don’t much like multiplayer anything and I have already run into quests in Destiny that I can’t complete because they involve multiplayer missions. (The main reason I don’t like multiplayer is that I’m not very good, I don’t have the time to get very good, and being not very good makes it not very much fun, even if I’m playing cooperatively rather than PvP. I’d much rather slog through single player campaigns at my own pace.)
So. Recommendations for a space based FPS with Halo/Destiny sensibilities?
Have you tried Borderands? The PS4 version is the Handsome Jack collection which includes Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel and all the DLC for both. It’s a hoot!
Stick with Destiny, just ignore any quests that have a PvP component if that’s not your thing. There are certain rewards you won’t be able to get, but you can enjoy all the PvE portions of the game: story, strikes, and raids, without ever going into the PvP world of the crucible. Just discard any quests that ask you to do PvP tasks. They aren’t critical, and you can always get them back from the quest kiosk down by the Vanguard table.
Regarding Destiny, it’s not just the PvP multiplayer, it’s also the PvE multiplayer I don’t like much. A couple of reasons, sometimes there’s no one to do the strike with, and I’ve done strikes where I’ve been woefully unprepared and have been completely useless, getting killed all of the time while my team mate goes around killing things and saving my arse. It would be fun if it was with people I know in the same room, but with strangers from around the world I generally feel like a liability.
I’ve played Borderlands on the PC and most of the first Bioshock game on the Xbox, they were fine, but not quite what I’m looking for.
Hmm, maybe. It’s the kind of thing I’d have to play a demo of first or get super cheap.
Since I wrote the OP I’ve bought the Taken King expansion and I’m finding the single player experience to be a vast improvement over the earlier content. I think the answer to my question of “what can I play that is like Destiny but is not Destiny?” is in fact Destiny, as Sterling Archer suggested.
I don’t think there’s anything quite like HALO on the PS4.
Maybe a Killzone? But it definitely doesn’t control anything like HALO. Maybe Crysis 3 - that features large zones that you move though, but again, it feels different.
