So what's good on PS4?

Right now I have one game on my new PS4: Uncharted 4.

What are some other games I should get? What’s good? What are you enjoying or have enjoyed? Recommend me…anything.

What have you enjoyed in the past?

Many things. I’m not very picky when it comes to games. If I listed everything I was interested in, It would be a novel sized post, which is why I wanted to try to avoid listing any interests at all…but to give just a small, partial list (yes, this list IS small), some games I’m thinking of getting for it are:

Far Cry 4, Batman: Telltale Series, Little, Big Planet 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption, Little Nightmares, The Last Guardian, Until Dawn, the other Uncharted games, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Attack on Titan, the Infamous series, the Destiny games, maybe Titanfall 2, Dishonored 2, Calvino Noir, GTA V, Borderlands 2, X-COM 2, Feist, FreezeMe, I’m literally listing them as I’m browsing through them now…
…so many, so much–the list goes on and on. That’s just a small sample. I don’t even know what among those are good, they’re just games that looked good and that I think I might like. There are hundreds of others, both I can’t remember the names of right now and that I don’t even know about yet…feel free to recommend anything, really, hahaha.

It’s easier to just say what you’ve been enjoying on there and think is good and I’ll take all of the collective answers as good advice.

Red Dead Redemption has a sequel coming out later this year.

I thought Fallout 4 was a lot of fun. I played it through 3 different times. I’m playing Doom right now and it’s fun, but I don’t find it easy, so it’s a little frustrating that way.
ETA: Yes, play GTA V. That one’s a blast!

I agree with Fallout 4 being great, but it should be great on any system, not just PS4.

I’ve heard good things about Horizon Zero Dawn and Witcher 3 even though I haven’t played them.

Currently I’m playing Mass Effect Andromeda, it’s not as good as the first three, but I’m having fun.

I really enjoyed Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain while playing through it, but in retrospect, I found it a little too engrossing. That is, after I started to lose interest in it, I said to myself “why the heck did I just pour virtually all of my spare time for the past 2 months into that?”

If you like Uncharted 4, I think it would be worth getting Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and playing 1 through 3, though the first one is just one gunfight after another, with not enough of a balance between fighting and puzzles IMO.

The ones I indicated in bold I can attest are great and you should get A.S.A.P. Others I personally enjoyed the hell out of:

  • Alien: Isolation
  • Fallout 4
  • Both new Tombraider games
  • The Witness
  • The new King’s Quest series

The new inFamous I wasn’t much a fan of, Thief 4 I enjoyed, although it doesn’t come close to the first two.

Okay, I don’t have a PS4, so I can’t speak from having played the PS exclusives, however, I’m familiar enough with some of these to comment.

Short version–

From your list, I’d suggest
The Last Guardian
The Last of Us
Horizon Zero Dawn
Borderlands 2
in that order.

More detailed thoughts–

Batman: Telltale Series: Lots of people like it, but I didn’t much care for the story or most of the characterization. Their take on the Penguin was interesting, and more impressive than most. From what I’ve seen, gameplay is quick-time events, dialogue choices, and some connect-the-clues puzzles.

Horizon Zero Dawn: Don’t know the whole story, but it’s intriguing, the worldbuilding is cool, there are fun characters, and the gameplay looks awesome. Iconoclastic sneaky/acrobatic/badass warrior-girl battles animalistic machines, explores mysteries, etc. Very cinematic combat.

The Last of Us: The gameplay is sneaky combat/survival horror/environmental puzzles in a zombie apocalypse with a twist. It’s not the reason people talk about the game, though; its real draw is the story, which is extremely powerful.

Little Nightmares: Puzzle platformer featuring a very small maybe-child in a big, hostile world. Reminds me Limbo (which was both great and horrifying), but 3D. Dark, but I find the aesthetic appealing.

The Last Guardian: A boy and his giant winged beast friend, navigating towering ruins. Beautiful game, and the beast is one of the most amazingly realized creatures I’ve ever seen in a game. Powerful, but extremely minimalist story–don’t expect easy answers from it. Caveat one: many people say the boy is awkward to control in the platforming sections. Caveat two: the beast really acts like an animal. There will be times when he doesn’t understand what you want or acts on his own. You’ll have to be patient, pay attention to his behavior, and learn how to get him to do what you want. Expecting him to behave like a normal game-critter companion is likely to lead to frustration.

Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom: Hack and slash with some squad command elements. Lots of really fast acrobatic combat as you use a grapnel-and jets system to move in 3 dimensions and fight giant opponents. I’m told the movement system is surprisingly intuitive and fun. You play missions as various characters from the anime as you follow its storyline.

Dishonored 2: Haven’t played or watched it, but Dishonored is a first-person sneaker in a dark steampunkish setting. I found it fun, but I’m a sucker for both the aesthetic and the game style. I expect the sequel is more of the same, but the story might be hard to follow if you haven’t played the first.

Borderlands 2: I’ve played and love this game on PC. It’s a first-person shooter/RPG with a sort of cartoonish style on a crapsack world. Expect lots of dark humor, satire, and an over-the-top hateable villain. There’s an assortment of playable characters with different styles and abilities. You don’t have to have played the other Borderlands games (but they’re fun, too). I don’t much like playing shooters with a controller, though, so I don’t think I’d enjoy it quite as much on PS4.

Do you play JRPGs? Persona 5 is about the best you can get on any current gen machine, period.

I can recommend Horizon: Zero Dawn, as long as you like the Far Cry-style gameplay (take over camps, kill beasts in the wild). The machines require tactics and clever thinking - I’m enjoying it a lot.

Witcher 3 is great. I played it on PC, so my game is a little modded (to allow equipment buffs to last longer), but vanilla would be just as good.

Grand Theft Auto 5 has a good multiplayer scene. The single-player story is decent, but I liked Saint’s Row more. The multiplayer starts getting to Saint’s Row levels of absurdity, which I can appreciate.

Doom is a solid FPS. Gets a little silly with the platforming, but it’s still a good shooter with some nice weapons and OK upgrade system.

Rocket League is excellent, though I might be a little biased as I played football (aka soccer) as a kid.

I recommend against buying Destiny, if only because Destiny 2 is going to be coming out, and I don’t know what the plans are for continued support of the new game.

I also recommend against Ark: Survival Evolved. I like the idea of riding around on dinosaurs, but the game is still in beta, and isn’t exactly stable. Wait on this one.

I have mixed feelings about XCOM 2. I liked it right up until the last mission, which was very poorly designed. Additionally, I don’t know how well it would play with a controller (I played it on PC).

I also have mixed feelings about Titanfall 2. I like the game a lot, but sometimes it can take quite a while for me to find a game online I can join. The single-player campaign is good, but awfully short for the asking price.

The following games are on my short list, as soon as I finish my current playthroughs:
Persona 5 - good JRPG, as Koldanar indicated.
**Nioh **- Dark Souls-like action RPG, samurai setting
**Hitman **- reboot of the franchise, with a “season” of various hits. Good stealth gameplay.
Toukiden 2 - monster hunting in a very over-the-top RPG setting
Neir: Automata - RPG that changes things up a bit. First it’s an action RPG, then a top-down shooter, then a platformer, back to an RPG, then cutscene, then RPG again …

And then there’s the games from smaller studios:
Shovel Knight - metroidvania platformer. Quite entertaining.
Snake Pass - play as a snake! With a bird companion! Saving the world, or something.
Wonder Boy - remake of an old classic platformer
**Aaero **- rhythm-based shooter
Cosmic Star Heroine - JRPG in a classic 16-bit style

Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne are both PS4 games; if you’ve never tried one of the FromSoft games of the last decade - the Souls series plus Bloodborne - you really ought to give one of them a try. They are not necessarily for everyone, but the people who do like them - I’m one of them - like them a lot.

The first three installments are PS3-era games (or earlier), but the two in bold are available right now for PS4. In the case of DS3, there’s still an active user base so the online component of play - which is a pretty unique approach to it - is still pretty viable.

A note - lots of people claim these are uber-difficult games. They are not. They simply reward patience and observation, and don’t hold your hand, either with mechanics, or storytelling. (They aren’t exactly easy, either, though).

These games have one of my favorite ways of telling the game story - you have to infer much of it from the items you get as well as the stories told to you by the NPCs you encounter along the way.

If you’re interested in rhythm games, Thumper is also good. It’s got cool visuals and intense music. It’s relatively short, but like most rhythm games, it has replay value in trying to improve your performance.

The Dark Souls games and Bloodborne kind of hearken back to the “Nintendo Hard” era of gaming. They require trial and error to learn bosses’ patterns, and they punish errors pretty harshly. That said, if you’re looking for challenging fantasy combat in epically grim surroundings, these games fit the bill. Don’t expect them to hold your hand, story-wise, though–you’ll mostly have to piece together the lore yourself to have much idea what’s going on.

I played the original Dark Souls and loved it. Yes it’s tougher than most modern games but I’m old school and enjoy the challenge, and it really was worth it.

I don’t own a PS4 (I play Xbox one) but Horizon: Zero Dawn looks good enough to make me want to buy one (sadly not available for Xbox).

Stuff I have played and have enjoyed.

AAA Games:
Shadow of Mordor
Just Cause 3
Infamous 2 Second Son
The Last of Us (a must play… sequel coming out soon)
Yakuza 0

Games I bought but are still in my queue: Mad Max, Uncharted Collection

all of the above can be had cheap now (except Yakuza 0)

Indie games:
Rocket League
Binding of Isaac
Spelunky
Darkest Dungeon
Resogun
Rez Infinite

(yes I like roguelikes)

Stuff I am waiting for eagerly:

Wipeout Omega
Gran Turismo Sport
Yakuza 6

I also recommend getting PS4 plus, theres usually at least one free game a month worth spending some time on.

I mourn the dilution of the terms ‘roguelike’ and ‘metroidvania’ that have become prevalent in video game discussion. Sigh.

My go-to game on PS4 is Diablo III. I love it.

I like Total Biscuit’s Term: Rogue-Lite instead of the inappropriate rogue-like.

NetHack is Rogue-like.

Diablo is not.

Ok sure, most of the one’s I listed are “rogue-lite”, but they are still fantastic games.

Darkest Dungeon IMO deserves to actually be a “rogue-like”, in that it has perma death, random dungeons, turn based combat and randomly generated quests.
