Puppy naming help

My friend has recently decided to foster 6 4-week-old puppies to save them from being put down. The mother is being euthanized and animal services is over-crowded (I believe he said there are hundreds of dogs waiting to be euthanized) so, it’s my friend to the rescue. Several weeks of bottle feeding and house training a half dozen puppies. Gotta love this guy.

So, they’re Catahoula Leopard dogs and I believe he said there are 2 black/white, 2 tan/white, and 2 blue/tan merle. They sound adorable, I’m going to visit this weekend, will probably fall in love and get one once they’re weened.

He said I could help name them, so… looking for good ideas. I know him, he’ll probably want a theme, like name them after a 6-piece band or something of that sort. Me, I’m thinking, since they originated in Louisiana, some Cajun names are in order. Let’s hear some ideas.

I say one gets to be named “Gambit”.
Gah. I’m a dork. hangs head in shame

They’ll be a handful.

Here’s a list of names that have been retired in memory of especially powerful hurricanes. The ones that have affected Louisiana appear in red.

Sailboat

I thought Gambit would be cool too, so you’re not the only dork. Then I was looking at lists of Cajun musicians. I like the name Sady, and Madeleine, and Beau. Or food. Jambalaya, beignet, gumbo… Black beans and rice?

The hurricane idea is cool, too. Dunno how many males/females, so there might not be enough boy names to go around though.

I really like Gambit too.

Here is a list to some Cajun dog names. [http://www.favorite-puppy-names.com/cajun-dog-names.html](Cajun dog names)

One of the girls needs to be an Irma.

What about “Frances”, for a pun on the word “French” in…well…French?

Not really Louisiana-related, but I’ve always thought Strongheart would be a good name for a dog, after this fellow.

And here is Wikipedia’s list of famous dogs. Hachiko is one of my favorites.

Will your friend be adopting them out? I may be interested in acquiring one.

Do they all have the spots? They could be named after spotted cats. Some of the names of the smaller cats are not well known. Like Margay or Sand. Caracal is a cool cat name, too, but they’re not spotted.

Yeah, he’s acting as a foster parent until they’re old enough to be adopted- maybe a month or 2. He just wanted to save them from the chopping block, but as he has a cat, 2 rats, and another dog already, he doesn’t have the time/room/energy to keep them all.

Whereabouts are you? He’s in central FL (Gainesville to be exact).

What about ‘Dammit’?

(Its very a useful name for a dog.)

I’m in Alexandria, VA – near DC. But roadtrips are always good. I’ve been wanting a dog for some time. I’m still not sure this is the right time and the right breed, but if you can put me down as a maybe, that would be very cool. Perhaps you could PM me with his contact information and I could give him a call as the weaning time gets a little closer.

If the mother’s being euthanized, won’t they be weaned right away? What I mean is, if you can find willing feeders, they can take pups now.

As for names, how about naming them after Simpsons characters? Bart, Lisa, Homer, Maggie, Marge and Mr. Burns.

Squeeeeeee!!! He posted pictures, they are adorable!

I was mistaken about the colors, there are 2 black ones, 2 reds, and a couple tan merles.

And yes, they are technically being weaned now, so anyone willing to bottle feed them 4x a day could take them. My friend decided to foster them because he has too much time on his hands, he’s getting over a recent break-up and wants something to take his mind off it. But I know how he is, he would hesitate to trust anyone to take on such a responsibility, and wants to make sure they are adoptable before sending them on their merry way.

How friggin’ cute!

Aw! That’s a cage full of squee.
Hmph. Why do I have to be poor and live on the wrong side of the country. I wanna nuzzle some puppy.

Ooooooh, look at their fat little tummies!! I want one! I want one!!

I can’t have one - I’m 4000 miles away. :frowning:

Oh, my! That is quite a lot of squee! And much as I desperately want one, I think I’d better back out of the running. I’ve been reading about the breed, and it looks like they’re just not very suited to apartment/small yard life, but need lots of room to roam and run. Now I’m sad. :frowning:

How about Remy and Lamar, from a couple of the best characters from The Big Easy?

They are seriously cute.

Yikes? What kind of shelter would euthanize a nursing mother???

On-topic, how about “Prudhomme” as a name?
