So what did you think?
I thought the main character looked like a young David Duchovney, and seemed to be going for the deadpan delivery of Kyle McLachlan. I’m not sure I believed it, but there were times where he seemed very sincere, determined, and vulnerable at the same time that were sort of appealing.
The story has me interested, and the “game show” aspect is pretty fun. I caught a couple of websites listed on screen during the show and looked them up this morning. It’s sort of cool in a Blair Witch/Twin Peaks kind of way. If Twin Peaks were made today I bet there would be websites with clues. (Maybe there were in the late '80s, but I sure wasn’t online then.)
So far it looks like there is something sinister going on in the town, possibly having to do with experiments on humans. There are overt biblical references, and one of the mysteries is why a bible was stolen from the casino’s vault along with over 1 million dollars.
I think I’m hooked.
Also, can anyone tell me where I’ve seen the girl who played “Dawn” the cop? She looked so familiar but I can’t put my finger on who she is. IMDB was no help.
I saw the first episode–it was OK, but too arch and overly-stylized without any weight. It seems like it wants to be a Tarantino-ish Twin Peaks, but looking back at the Lynch series, the first episode was extremely moving and disconcerting, since the town was more than quirky; it was enveloped in a shroud of gloom and sorrow that couldn’t help but pique your curiosity. Push is just eccentric, but there’s nobody or nothing to attach to emotionally. Who stole the money? Who cares? That’s all I was thinking after the episode was over, despite there being some fun moments.
I’m not planning on watching any more, but if I were to, it would only be if they take the very attractive Melora Walters (Magnolia) from behind that desk and put her in the field for some subtantial airtime.
ArchiveGuy, I agree with you that Twin Peaks was far superior, especially the first episode. But in the absense of a David Lynch series and X-Files, I’m glad to have something new and quirky to watch. I wasn’t crazy about the first episode, but kept watching through the second hour (they showed two episodes back to back Thursday night), and by the end of the second one I was much more interested.
Are you saying that Meloral Walters played “Dawn”? I looked at her picture on IMDB and I don’t think it’s the same person.
No, Malora Walters played Grace, the agent’s secretary back at the IRS office. I think Dawn didn’t show up 'til the 2nd episode (which I missed). As for new and quirky, I have hopes for Buffy’s Josh Whedon’s new series Firefly. Still, let us know if you win the jackpot, k?
Oh yeah, the $1.045 mil is mine already!
Heh.
I agree, Firefly does look promising. I didn’t get a good look at Grace - I’ll make a point to watch for her next week.
I wasn’t sure anyone would post about this show, with $1,045,000 on the line…
But I found it compelling. A Twin Peaks/X-Files mystery, with a little something extra. With good music.
Dawn is Liz Vassey, most recently on The Tick. Armand Assante as the big guy was a very good menacing performance.
What was the clue in the second show?
I couldn’t figure out the second episode’s clue either, and my mom and I have been writing down all the references, numbers, repetitions, etc. so I can type them up. (Do I have too much time on my hands?)
What was The Black Box? A hollowed-out Bible? The empty safe they found outside? Something else?
There are various website to visit where you may be able to gather clues too:

Well, to be the dissenter… I found it mind-numbingly boring, and gave up a half hour into the pilot. <crosses one show of list of new ones to check out> I don’t think the main character looks like David Duchovny, but Chris Issak on the other hand- that comparison has also been made, and I’m more inclined to agree with it.
