My IBM Netscape 2276/12u is on the window sill waiting for the sign that sez-“deep Six the d—mned thing”.
I have run a complete recovery, isolated the machine to a dedicated line. dumped all of the added programs so it is now an internet only machine, ran the IBM lockup-cleanup procedure and blued the air with verbal choices in half a dozen languages and equally as many accents…
Ive checked out the mouse system, modem, and everything else that comes to mind--------and it still freezes-----or locks.
The record was wednesday last ,when it managed to accomplish six freezes in 27 minutes.
Did I count them?----a feller needs SOME enterainment!
SO------any puter mavens out there with sleeve cards?
Or should I just pack it in and run out to the Dell store?
it’s no longer a challenge------it has reached the humiliation level.
Last call for help ---------or after 1/1 it’s landfill!
Sounds like an overheating problem to me. Open it up and check that all the fans are working properly - especially the one on the CPU. And after it’s been on for a while, shut down and see if anything inside is running hot, most likely the CPU again, or memory.
netscape? when you say recovery, do you mean a reformat and reinstall? a continuing problem after doing that usually means it’s a hardware problem, and you might want to prepare the wallet…
you might want to post your system specifications and details. i’m guessing it’s not even a desktop.

After it stutters and stammers it’s way into reality it finally settles down and will plug along for an hour or so before going chillin’ up again.
I’m practicing my "ol’ heave do"routine.
At the mid eighties point of my days my patience is dwindling down to a pittance
If you’ve wiped and replaced all the software and still have a problem, I would vote for hardware.
One last-ditch thing you can do is remove all non-essential hardware and see how things go. Take out things like the sound card, modem, network card, etc. and see how it works.
Other than that, I’d say you are looking at a defective piece of memory and/or CPU. Memory is cheap enough to buy and replace, and if that isn’t the problem, you can save it and use it on your next computer . If it’s the CPU, time to throw in the towel (unless you really have an itch to spend a lot of time and money to put a new CPU in an old box).
How old is this machine?
When’s the last time you had the case removed and given it a good blow out with canned air?
Right beofre you take NattoGuy’s very good advice, take a look around inside. Is there a dust build up? What do the capacitors look like? Are all their bottoms flat and shiny? No bulging or brown discolouration?
I had the same problem a few weeks back - changed the power supply and it went away. Tracking it down was a pain - you have to play the elimination game.
My PC would lock up even in the BIOS setup screen, so I knew it wasn’t software. Actually it was a big help because I found I could pull a lot of hardware and still get into the BIOS setup. Check yours out.
Basically I was able to reduce the system to motherboard, memory, power supply and video card, (NO drives, not even a CPU) get into the BIOS and after a few minutes it still locked. I tried a different video card, same crap, then I had to bite the bullet and start buying parts and switching them out. So I now have a working computer, some extra memory that I didn’t really want, and a nice new power supply that seems to have fixed the problem.
I had a pin-bending, pry-the-CPU-off-the-heatsink-with-a-screwdriver experience that wasn’t fun, so I suggest you leave it till last. (Basically the heat-conductive gunk between the CPU and heat sink was so adhesive I pulled the CPU out of the ZIF socket just getting the heat sink off. Next time I’ll break the join by twisting the heat sink before lifting it.)
PLEASE tell me, a youngster of only 60, that you drank hard, caroused, chased wimmin’, and generally lead a debauched life, yet made it that far. (just planning ahead on my part )
