I’m not exactly an old fart around here, but I can still remember the day when the username peace used to drive exasperation into the hearts of stout men. He wasn’t subject-obsessed on the level of, say, JDT or Scoo-whatever, but IMHO he still had a lot of the qualities that separate the truly exceptional loonies from the more garden-variety ones:
His elliptical writing style, attributed to the fact that English wasn’t his native language;
His prolonged and torturous dances around such concepts as logic, providing cites, debating skills, etc., when called on them by other posters;
and the most entertaining one for me was
All in all, I thought peace was a pretty damn entertaining guy; I was almost sad when he had his meltdown and finally got banned. I would suggest that interested parties check out these pit threads and follow the linkety-links within…

I would like to second (or third) the nomination for peace. I got sort of personally attached to him since he registered about the same time I did and he’s the only looney I ever had consistent run-ins with. Kind of like my arch-nemesis really. I almost miss him.
He reincarnated later as Bluish but he just didn’t seem as much fun. I think he’s actually still registered.
Of course I’ve been watchin SoOoO_UgLy’s antics with some interest. The kid’s got potential.

FreakFreely and FORMERAGENT definitely belong on my list. FF had a really good slow revelation of personal reality going on in that thread, while FA just seems to have appeared out of the blue with looney guns blazing. And I have no idea what was going on with Boo Boo’s Tigress et al… definitely seriously messed up, though.
Argh! When compiling my original list I forgot AutumnWindChick and Peace! Thanks for reminding me of her, edwino- BTW I remember your looney of the month thread, and I second your nomination for AWC. She definitely deserves some points for the fact that although she can’t handle textual arguments well, she has performed ground breaking experiments in the field of multimedia debate. Not particularly successful experiments, mind you, but at least she’s trying something new.
Regarding SPOOFE and his looniness… Weirddave, are you suggesting that there’s anything wrong with pursuing a regular daily regimen of rectodental hygiene? My proctoralologist is gonna be miffed…

I notice in those threads linked that there seems to be a large number of banned posters.
I know that the actual threads where the banning took place is often elswhere but certain subjects do seem to bring them out of their hidey holes.

Oh, and for those wondering, the original He Who Shall Not Be Named was, from what I’ve heard, perky_dan. Yes, I named him. If he’s still capable of being summoned by name after all this time (at least two years), he truly has no life. As for Phaedrus, I think he moved on as well.
Hmmm… I guess I’m breaking my own advice on not perseverating on such things.
Actually, I put JDT and Pheadrus in thier own catagory–they shared certain charecteristics which these other loonies lacked:
Well spoken. They both expressed themselves pretty well. They knew when to use the caps key and when not to. THey punctuated.
They had thought about thier positions and were, overall, consistient. They were using freaky moon-logic, mind you, but they used it consistiently.
They were willing to debate. Way more willing than the rest of us. As I remember, the original Flat Earth thread was actually fought in shifts–one team of trained evelution defenders would argue themselves to exhaustion and we would slowly phase in another group(with David B, in his seminal performance, sticking out most of the thread). Both Pheadrus and JDT actually read every arguement presented to them, and responded to them. Unfortunantly, they used thier crazy-moon logic to form those responses.
They were sincere. There is no doubt in my mind that they both believed in thier positions 100%. That quality of overweening arrogance, the certainty that they were right, simply can’t be faked. Now, Phadrus HAD to know he was bluring the truth with some tuff–like hte “I am a acientist, I am a lawyer, I am a sole ruler of a small south american country” stuff, but I suspect in his mind htat was all perfectly justified as it was in the service of the greater truth.
They were both stealth loons. Because they could write, and reason, and respond, the fact that they were stark raving mad slowly occured to you are you were watching the process. It resulted in a sort of sick facination.
Anyway, I think the combination of these traits made these two posters utterly unique. They remained facinatiing long aftr others became boring, because you just couldn’t help yourself–they SEEMED teachable–they were intelligent, well-spoken, capable of logic–so you just had to keep constructing arguements that should have been convinceing.
It’s also worth noting that Phaedrus was never banned, and in fact never did anything that gave us half and excuse to ban him.
I od think that AWC might grow into a full-fledged kook of the same type, with another 20 years to get her arguements into unassalible order, using moon-logic.
Wasn’t there some point where Phaedrus admitted that he was just arguing about something for the fun of it, even though it was wrong. I think it was in the evolution thread (one of them at least) in reference to his pro-flat earth position. Having read a bit of the stuff, my conclusion is that Phaedrus simply liked arguing with us for the fun of it, and JDT was simply completely obsessed with circumcision.
Oh, and I guess I should mention Tom Dark. Long argument in Comments on Cecil’s Columns about Velivokskian mechanics, among a couple other things. JonF played the role tomndebb had to JohnJohn or David B had to phaedrus.
Oh, and JohnJohn (aka Cyberian54, aka Sandycane) was nuts as well.
Oh, and AvenueB Dude was another. He was opposed to the concept of suspects havig rights. Also, he thought it was wrong for lawyers to give advice on the board about what to do if arrested.
And Orion*******Orion, who was convinced that there was a rational, non-religious reason to persecute homosexuals, even if he never mentioned what it was. But, since Eastern European nations persecuted gays, and were atheistic, it must not be a religious thing.
And of course, there was OgreFade/The Urge/Thoughts, who was about as thin-skinned as you can get without taking offense to the mere existence of the rest of the world.
