Has the SDMB community ever witnessed someone go insane?

I can’t remember names, but every once in a while someone will mention a poster who was clearly very mentally disturbed. And there are posters who are open about their depression, Bi-polar disorder or other mental conditions.

Have there been any long-time posters who started out rock-solid sane, but through their posts it was obvious that they were exhibiting signs of schizophrenia, paranoia (beyond the usual CT crap), etc?

There have been at least one depressed person who ended up committing suicide.

Creepiest post/username ever.

I have my suspicions.

I’ve seen a few that probably don’t count, since you can’t “go” insane if you’re already there.

(On some days, I should probably include myself in that group…)

Basically any such individuals would probably get Banned before they reached the insane stage.

Member Quasimodem has changed since his Alzheimer’s diagnosis. He is very upfront about it. It seems to frustrate him a lot.

We read about the guy taking mushrooms.
:dubious:

Well that’s hardly surprising. I think everyone with Alzheimer’s gets incredibly frustrated by it, for good reason, until they get too far gone to know. (I watched my aunt going through it, at a relatively young age.) Alzheimer’s is not insanity, though (although some of the symptoms can look a bit like it).
Also, I’m a kumquat. :stuck_out_tongue:

Wasn’t there a poster who was convinced that his neighbors in another apartment were “following him around” and talking about him in undiscernible voices? After it became clear that he was delusional, we all tried to convince him to see a doctor. Unsuccessfully, probably.

Trouble is, how could we ever know for sure? Between impossible quadriplegics, pyjama-pants girls and posters who watch movies with their special ghost friend, no one can be truly sure of anything they read on the internet.

This, pretty much.

Also… nobody in this thread has mentioned me yet?

Seriously, though, sometimes I’m worried I’ll go off the rails (more than I already am) and that it’ll show up in my posts, more than usual.

Remember Tech Chick? She was always a little off, but something happened and she went completely bonkers and reportedly conspired with a previously banned poster to try to take down the board. That was an interesting time. Probably 2002 or thereabouts.

I believe worrying about it is proof that you are not.

What’s the “Pyjama Girls” thing?
How to I get one?

You do it the old fashioned way-you make one up.

About someone going insane - what about this famous meltdown:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=728367&postcount=228

"I believe everything I said, even the parts that contradict the other parts, but I know that none of it is true. "

Was it real? Or mere trolling?

I recall one poster who was suspended until he got his bipolar under control, but I prefer not to name names.

IIRC he (she?) was listening through the floors of the apartment, it wasn’t even like someone was following them around outside, it was that they were convinced the people downstairs were following them around room to room.

But someone showing up already like that is one thing, it’s different then a long standing poster going off the rails.

Yeah, there usually already broken by the time we get 'em.

Maybe Beryl Mooncalf? Or was he already crazy when he arrived?

Posting in haiku form is a sure sign of mental instability.
