Why are you here on the SDMB? You start lots of threads in GD, yet rarely return to the debate. You start lots of polls in IMHO, for no apparent reason. What do you gain from this?
Seriously, I’m bewildered. Some of your debates and polls are interesting, and lead to good discussion, yet you don’t seem to care about anything beyond your OP.
What need does the SDMB fulfill for you? It doesn’t seem to be a need to turn yourself into someone who is not a self-absorbed, obnoxious, and ignorant little twit. What is it?
There are some people whose main purpose on forums like this seems to be to start discussions. They appear to take some sort of self-centered pleasure in being The Person Who Started the Thread. They’re not actually very interested in participating in discussions, or in having their ideas or their assumptions challenged or debated; rather, they prefer to set up a debate and watch everyone else battle it out. It’s the internet version of “Why don’t you and him fight?” It could be that Qin Shi Huangdi is one of those people.
He certainly seems to be pretty good at it in GD and IMHO, as you have observed. He has some competition in GQ, though, where the prize for Person Who Asks the Most Inane Questions and Then Never Returns to the Thread surely must go to ralph124c, with Jinx doing a yeoman’s job in second place. I basically skip over any GQ thread where either of them is the OP, because it’s likely to be something completely stupid, or something so easy that typing the same question into Google would have produced the exact answer that they were looking for.
I wouldn’t mind the inane question as much if the OP would just return to the damn thread.
Also, some of Curtis LeMay/Qin Shi Huangdi’s threads make me uncomfortable when I think about the fact that they’re being asked by a fourteen-year-old.
I don’t understand why anyone is bothered by this. He asks some questions, posts some polls. Who gives a shit if he doesn’t come back to his threads much?
At least one poster - not yet represented in this thread - has poste d at least five or six bitchy complaints about him, yet the poster has a history on this message board of approximately twenty bazillion posts and perhaps six sentences of meaningful content. I can name a dozen or more other posters with long histories here who add nothing of any substance, some of whom actually ARE jerks.
We’re all here for fun. Curtis Lemay/Chinese Name isn’t being disruptive or a jerk. If his thing is to start threads, then it’s to start threads. I don’t see what the big deal is.
I picture **Curtis **as an alien who landed somewhere in a red state who is gathering, as efficiently as possible, information about human sociopolitics. Which I have no particular problem with.
Why start a thread if you’re not going to come back to it? Why start a thread if you don’t care to respond to what people say in it? It’s a community here–at least I think it is. I, and I suspect most other posters here, start threads because we’re interested in what others have to say, and it’s unfair to not respond to their thoughts.
He reminds me, on a lesser scale, of andrewdt85.
I’d just like to know what he thinks he’s accomplishing here.
If you’re referring to me, at least have the balls to say my name. Yes, I’ve expressed that I find him annoying.
And I believe he said he was thirteen when he joined. I can buy he’s a young kid – he comes off like one, and even if he isn’t, well, if a troll wants to be treated like a kid, I say treat him like one. He certainly hasn’t been handled with kid gloves.
He seems like a young teenager who, while well-read, still desplays an astounding degree of arrogance, and seems to think he knows a lot more than he thinks he does. I don’t think people would have much of a problem with him if he didn’t continue lecturing them on aspects of morality, especially when he’s so young.
Hell, I don’t really know why I’m on these boards, let alone anyone else. I think it’s an unfair question.
And adding “substance” to the discussion? My WAG is that about 20% of the post are trollish, 30% of the posts are feeding the trolls, another 20% are people saying DNFTT, leaving about 30% of the posts as “substantive”.
I know one reason I’m here – because I can be a bigger smartass than I can in the RW.
Curtis strikes me as a budding Young Republican, possibly even a future skinhead. Exposure to other ideas is good for him. I think we ought to let him be – kids of that age don’t yet know what they don’t know and they don’t know who to believe. If he learns a little bit about either of those two things. he and we will be better for it.
