Queer as Folk 5/16 (and perhaps beyond); SPOILERS

Football player kissing Emmet on the lips, after making a special point saying he doesn’t do any queer stuff like that…does this mean the story arc of him coming out and maybe destroying his career but then everything is all right and he is the Grand Marshall of the Gay Pride Parade and everybody loves him? Or perhaps they will do a “Front Runner” story with, uh, “that kind” of ending (for those who have not read the book.

Ted is still a dork.

Why did Debbie push Brian’s mother to go see him, knowing full well the woman is a fanatical, hellfire nutcase?

So far it’s not an"affair" between Lindsay and the artist. It’s a fuck. I think it’s a dumb storyline, not looking to be anything much beyond when Melanie had her little one-nighter back in season 1. If we can forgive them hooking Emmett up with a woman then I think we can forgive them this indiscretion with Lindsay. I honestly don’t think they’re representing “all lesbians need is a man” with this.

Eh, I thought it was a fair episode but the Lindsay storyline bugs me too. It’s not so much that I think that it perpetuates a stereotype. It’s more that it seems highly unplausable. It just doesn’t jibe with her character, IMO.

I agree that the Michael/Ben situation is far from resolved. That wasn’t a happy look at the end of that scene. Relieved perhaps, but not happy. The fact that Ben went as far as he did is the real issue.

I understand why Debbie told Brian’s mom but I knew it would backfire. There just isn’t hope of resolution unless mom gets her head out of her ass. She has an interesting definition of “love”.

I did enjoy the trip to the chinese doctor.

But wasn’t that during Emmitt’s “ex-gay” stint? In that situation it’s kinda plausable. If Lindsay was going to cheat, it would be with a Lita type - maybe even Lita herself should have been back in town.

I really hate the football player storyline. What kind of self-respecting gay guy puts up with that “I’m not a fag because I’m a top” crap?

One with a respect for gay tradition? After all for decades “I’m not a fag because I don’t do anything” was the national motto of trade.

Personally if all I’m in it for is a fuck I don’t much care if the guy wants to think he’s straight, as long as he doesn’t disrespect me in the process. Drew is kind of borderline as far as I’m concerned in the respect department. They’re doing this sort of half-assed version of the down-low. It looks like maybe Emmett is sensing that Drew can be moved off the “I’m not a fag” thing.

…I thought that scene with Lindsey and the artist was hot. And they always hinted that Lindsey still has feelings for Brian, so it’s totally within her character.

Some thoughts on last nights episode (6/27)…

Melanie and Lindsey - Boring and predictable storyline.

Emmet - Much more interesting storyline although it was predictable that he was going to be seen at the football game. Next week should be fun when he gets the phone call from the fiance.

Ben, Michael, and Hunter - I thought that was the most interesting part of the show.

Naw, the most interesting part of the show was, when Carl and Debbie started making out, what happened to the melon? Seriously, she was holding the melon in front of her and Carl was standing awful close.

Why do you suppose, seeing as how when Justin was under 18 the producers slapped a “even though one storyline deals with underage sex all the principal actors are over 18” but they haven’t had one since Hunter appeared (even though the sex was all off-screen)?

I swear these are some of the most clueless people on the planet. They know everything about each other, but they constantly and consistently misread each other. And the Emmet storyline bothers me. There’s no way he could have rationally believed that he was anything more than an on-the-side piece of ass for Drew.

Given that Melanie cheated on Linsey in Season 1, she has some chutzpah to act so aggrived when Linsey did the same thing.

And Emmett said he was falling in love with the football player? Hel-LO, he’s got a fiancee! As Lib said, Em is a fool for not knowing that he’s just a POA for that on-the-DL POS.

Yeah, but Mel cheated with a woman. Lindsay did it with a man and has thus committed the unpardonable sin. Or near-unpardonable. Given the average half-life of storylines on this series I don’t see this stretching out past the season finale.

Emmett is a fool. A fool for love. He follows his heart (and sometimes his nether regions) even when his brain knows for a fact it’s a bad idea. Witness his attempted conversion. Witness his relationship with George (not that this was a bad idea but it was certainly violative of the norms of gay society). Witness his return of his inheritance rather than denying said relationship. Witness his entire relationship with Ted (although that seems to be on the mend back to friendship). So it’s not in the least surprising that he would fall in love with Drew even knowing the score (although Drew did change the rules well into the game so Emmett’s not entirely to blame).

I keep wondering if the whole Drew storyline is some kind of reference to the Kordell Stewart rumors a couple years back.

And while yes, Mel did cheat on Linz back in Season 1, Mel seems like the kind of lesbian who would consider jumping the fence to be a betrayal in itself, regardless of the extramarital hanky-panky.

I am kind of worried about Em…Drew has a LOT to lose here. Wonder how far he’d go to keep his secret secret?

Will Brian ride a bike for the charity?
Will the hospice get the money they need?
Will the sun rise in the East?

Geez…some of these storylines are so lame they could be “ripped from the headlines” of Readers Digest.

Did they simply run out of good storylines, or do they have summer interns writing the scripts now?

Not their best episode. I just hope something interesting happens in the next, three final episodes of this season.

Oh, I forgot about the only moment more jaw-droppingly bizarre than the vanishing melon. Brian tells the fundraiser guy he’s a big believer in making money but not a big believer in telling them how to spend it? Um, hi, you don’t believe in telling people how to spend their money and you work in advertising?

So is the Drew story over now, or will he come out? My guess is that it is over, though a shame not to see, uh, more of Drew.

Surprise, surprise…Brian is going to take part in the bike race to raise $100,000…will he finish first and then pass out and Justin sees blood on his crotch where the plastic ball melted?

Hunter seems to have quickly gone from smartass hustler catting around all night to a sexually confused teenager who goes to his room when told. And the doting Gay fathers story is a little strange, considering this has all happened in, what, three weeks or so?

When Lindsey started walking up the stairs, I though “oh oh…don’t do stairs…have you never seen a soap opera where every pregnant character falls down stairs and loses the baby?” Luckily, that was one cheap soap plot they didn’t use.

Two more episoded this season…any guesses as to how it ends?

I think it’s over, which is kind of a shame since I was wondering how wrong they were going to get on the whole “down low” thing. Of course they can’t get much wronger than having a white guy on the DL anyways…

His client is donating $100,000 whether Brian rides or not. Brian’s only training because everyone’s telling him not to. I would love for Brian to have a big ol’ setback because I’m tired of the “Brian wants something, Brian doesn’t get it right away, Brian gets it with a twist” lines they’ve been doing since day one.

I don’t think Hunter is sexually confused, I think he’s full-bore straight. He was buying into thinking he was gay because he was having sex with men but that wasn’t of his own free will. Being away from the life allowed him to relate to people non-sexually which allowed him to figure out his sexuality.

As for the timeframe, I’ve completely given up on trying to figure that out. If I absolutely had to guess, though, I’d say that Hunter has been with Michael and Ben for about five months. He got with them before the election (presumably held in November) so call it October, and Vic died in February, so I figure it’s March on the show now. October to March, five months. But that’s a total guess, since linear time has very little meaning in QAF’s Pittsburgh. One week it’s Gay Pride and the next it’s Halloween.

Melanie will give birth prematurely and will either die in childbirth or reconcile with Lindsay (maybe both). Michael and Ben and Carl and Debbie will go to MA for a double wedding. Hunter might run away or attempt suicide. Nothing of significance will happen with Ted or Emmett.

Just caught the episode this morning on DVR. I think the writing has improved. Is this the same set of writers as before? I especially liked the scene of Emmett in his reflective shades, frustrated by all the images of Drew, holding onto Ted’s arm and pleading with a tone of misery, “Oh, please just put my eyes out now.” At that instant, an old woman passes by and drops a coin in Emmett’s palm. “You poor thing,” she intones. Very nice little almost-West-Wing touch.

I have a feeling that

Bryan is going to die during the Liberty Ride.

Um…I kinda doubt that. First of all, they have already been renewed for next season and, though like any soap they like their little cliffhangers, I doubt they will do anything drastic to a major character with at least one more full season to go, if not more.
