Queer Eye 02/14 - Kevin D

Oh dear god, another comic. Wasn’t Klutzy the Real Estate Magnate some sort of actor/comedian type? Haven’t we as a nation learned our lesson with stand-ups on reality TV with Rick whatsisname on Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?

“Would you marry him?”

“Hellll no!”

What, did no one watch?

Once again I walk away convinced that Thom is a lower-case-g god. While Kevin’s “boom boom room” is not something I find attractive, it was totally him and totally different than Thom’s other creations, reflecting the client rather than the decorator and built “on the cheap” compared to other decorating shows. Incredible.

Kevin was being ironic and self-deprecating when he referred to himself as “pretty damned sexy” wasn’t he?

Otherwise, 'eehh". No gratuitous Kyan skin (anybody know what the scar was on his chest in last week’s episode, incidentally?) and no major transformation of the person, just the room. I thought Kevin’s stand-up (which I know was majorly edited to get it into 2 minutes) needs a lot of work (don’t quit the day job just yet), though I liked that Jai got past the “make eye contact” shield for a moment. (That commercial with the show’s producer is being just a bit too self-referential, don’t you think?)

Imho the show needs to break out of the 30-something semi-professional white guy groove it’s been in and do some over-40 guys, blue collar guys, non-whites, etc… And there is NO SUCH THING as a poor excuse to show Kyan’s bare skin (though I have to admit Thom’s is a sexiness that I didn’t notice at first but that grows on me with each show).

  • That guy’s place was disgusting. Squalid is being way too kind. How do people live like that?

  • It was nice seeing Jim David. I like him and think he’s a very funny comic.

  • No fair! I want a tie converted into a D-ring belt, too!

  • Kyan with a five o’clock shadow? Yum.

  • Vintage blazers rock and Kevin wore them very well.

Once again, I spent the episode thinking “how does such a sloppy, unattractive guy get such a hot woman?” Seriously.

Thom was adorable with his little dust allergies. I really felt bad for him that he was the one who was going to be stuck in the apartment all “day.”

And it could have been easy for them to make OCD jokes, but they were very respectful of it. They are so sweet to their guys.

Two thoughts- wow, what a hole that apartment was. That’s the sort of filth that scream’s professional help needed. He mentioned OCD, but it was hard to tell if he was joking or serious.

Two, they were a great couple. Hopefully she can help with his organizational issues.

BTW: his material wasn’t too bad.

I thought it was pretty cute, but there weren’t too many standout moments for me, besides Thom’s decorating. They really only changed two rooms; it didn’t look to me like they did much in the kitchen or bathroom.

Other than changing the hairstyle and getting him some better vintage clothes, he didn’t need too much work on his appearance. I think his comic routine could use some work, but I don’t think too many stand-ups are funny to begin with. I did have to wonder why he was telling jokes about his girlfriend, while she was sitting there, before asking to marry her. I guess it all worked out in the end.

Favorite line: Thom, referring to the leather couch: “It’s long, black, and delicious!”

I thought the relationship between the straight guy and his lady was very sweet. Her parents were very sweet and he learned some Polish to talk to them.

I thought the whole thing was a great example of the difference between private and public perception of relationships. No one knows what it is like when it’s just the two of you.

I also liked his boom boom room. Very swanky.

I hope that at some point the cameras enter the homes of the Fab 5. I’d love to see what Thom’s own place looks like or what Carson comes home to after a day in the vintage shops. I’m guessing Kyan’s place is wall to wall mirrors, and I don’t blame him.

OMG! I’ve actually seen him do his standup! I think it was at Stand-Up NY about a year ago, and he was the “headliner”. Not that his name was on the marquee or anything, but he did go last. He was pretty damn funny, enough so that I instantly recognized him. Did the same material they showed on the show.

I thought he looked better before. The apartment is another story.
