In the chorus (lyrics here) of the song he says:
“you know, the movie song”
Well, I don’t know the movie song. Is he referring to a particular movie song? Which one? To romantic movie songs in general? Am I missing the point completely?
Enlighten me, please.
Snipped the Lyric just after the clue:
*There’s a place for us *you know the movie song
There’s a place for us,
A time and place for us.
Hold my hand and we’re halfway there.
Hold my hand and I’ll take you there
Somehow,
Some day,
Somewhere!
The movie is West Side Story, itself based on Romeo and Juliet- thereby the link between the song and the song referenced by the song.
Really originally a “Stage Musical Song” but “Movie Song” works better for Knopler’s lyrics.
Not previewing to see if I was beaten to the answer.
Ah! That makes perfect sense. I’ve never seen West Side Story, so that would probably never have clicked. Ha! Been wondering about that one for years.
Fits much better with the narrator’s persona, as well.
