In the first episode of the new season, Dean tells Sam he can’t trust him because Sam “chose a demon” over Dean, and Sam admits to a taste for blood. I’m wondering what he’s talking about so I read the recap at TWOP. According to the recap, in the season finale, Sam drank a demon’s blood so he’d have the strength to kill Lilith.
Is that what happened? If so, why would Dean be upset?
I get that, but why would Dean say that Sam “chose” a demon over Dean? From the recap, it appears that Sam used a demon, and for a good reason. It didn’t say anything about Dean being harmed because of it.
Essentially, they had both agreed on a plan to deal with Lilith, and then Sam decided his way would work much better 'cause Dean was weak, so he ran off to join his little demon buddy Ruby, who finished her mindfuck job by having Sam drink demon blood so that his mojo would go to 11. Which worked, BTW : he did kill Lilith, with the little side effect of triggering Armageddon.
S4 is a long arc of Sam being played by the demon Ruby. He thinks she wants to help him kill Lillith, and she does, but not for the reasons he thinks.
As for “choosing her over Dean”, as revelations of Sam and Ruby’s doings occur over the course of the season, Dean repeatedly tells Sam that Ruby’s motives aren’t to be trusted, and that even if her motives are pure, her methods suck. Sam won’t hear him, what with his single-minded focus on killing Lillith. Ultimately, he chooses (poorly) to trust Ruby over Dean. Apocalypse ensues.
S4 is also about the deterioration of Sam and Dean’s relationship. They both lie to each and hide things repeatedly throughout the season. Not only does Sam side with Ruby on how to kill Lilith, he engages in lots of really questionable behavior - culminating with killing a (possibly) innocent person to drink her blood.
It’s fun to go back and watch S3 with the knowledge of what Ruby was planning all along.
Thanks! That makes more sense. Dean’s comment about “choosing” Ruby made me wonder if there was a single scene or event where Sam did this, and I couldn’t believe it would happen like that.
Ultimately, he had to choose whether to work with Dean to stop Lucifer’s return, or to trust Ruby(a demon) and use her plan. He went with the demon and resurrected/restored Lucifer to Earth.
Of course. But the angels wanted the apocalypse as much as the demons did. And Castiel’s the one that let Sam out when he was being detoxed. Both Sam and Dean got played (Sam by the demons and Dean by the angels). I had a silly conversation a couple weeks ago about who you could blame the apocalypse on, and we found rationales for everyone who’s ever been on the show pretty much. It’s John’s fault for raising his kids to be so untrusting! It’s Mary’s fault for making the deal with the Yellow Eyed Demon in the first place that started the whole mess! It’s Bobby’s fault for letting his guard down around Sam in the season finale and getting knocked out!
This topic (who should be blamed/how the blame should be spread) is the source of a lot of arguing in the fandom right now. (You may not be aware of this, but Supernatural has a huge, and really crazy, online fandom.) The Samgirls are really put out that Sam has gotten all of the blame.
I don’t think Sam has gotten all of the blame. After all, Dean’s the one who set the whole thing in motion to begin with. That said, the show seems to be a lot more forgiving of Dean’s choice than Sam’s, which is peculiar. I mean, yeah, there’s the whole hell thing, but Sam’s choice was at least ostensibly driven by a more noble purpose than Dean’s.
On the other hand, self-delusion is a big moral no-no on this show, and lord knows that Dean’s self-loathing enough to not really need anyone else to beat up on him.
First, I obviously lied about not saying anything more.
I don’t think Sam has gotten all of the blame, either, but a lot of the screeching in the fandom has been about this. There are a surprising number of fangirls who don’t seem to understand how the show works and wish that Sam had stayed dead, or that Dean had stayed in hell, and will take any opportunity to bash the brother they don’t like. It’s really stupid, and apparently someone is forcing them at gunpoint to continue watching it. Anyway, SAM does seem to put all of the blame on himself, but I don’t think he’s had the opportunity yet to discuss exactly what happened with Dean and Cas. That ought to be interesting, and when he realizes how badly they were played by both the demons AND the angels, he’ll forgive himself a little.
I agree, it is strange that the show is so forgiving of Dean’s deal, which was made totally out of selfishness, but in practical terms, the show doesn’t work without Sam, and that was also S3, which is pretty uneven. (Due in part to network meddling, as well as to the writers’ strike.)
Oh. But he didn’t know what he was doing. I mean, he knew torturing was bad, presumably, but he didn’t realize that his actions were going to break the first seal.
And…Sam didn’t know that his actions would break the last seal, either.
I guess it’s just that we SAW Sam’s bad behavior, and Dean’s bad behavior took place during the summer hiatus.
Don’t stop on my account! I don’t have a lot invested in the show, as far as solving the mysteries, speculating about motives, etc. I just like to watch. If you told me now how it all ended, I still wouldn’t be spoiled.
