And I don’t think we know that they lactate, although Tuvok did imply in Voyager that they give a live birth, as his wife’s labor took 5 days or so with one of his kids.
In a New Frontier book, Dr. Selar goes into pon farr in a flashback chapter, and it’s quite intense from her perspective.
She goes on to say that pon farr is necessitated by the illogic of reproduction (who wants babies when they’re needy, shouting, shitting monsters?) and thus, pon farr evolved to force Vulcans to reproduce and continue the species. (So, presumably, homosexual sex wouldn’t break the cycle).
