questions about X-men 2 (spoileroonies)

When rogue puts out the fires is she using the leftovers of the powers from ice-man when they kissed to ‘freeze’ the fires, or does pyro’s ability to control fires extend to putting them out, and rogue is using that?
When ‘wheels’ (xavier) looks out of the window at the end and smiles, is he realizing that jean grey (‘phoenix’?) is still alive in some form?
Was nightshade a goodie behind the mind control? (like cyclops when he’s under it) If so it’s a shame she had to die. Her and wolverine would have made a nice couple.

No, not really. She’s a vengeful little bitch in the comics.

They DID make a nice couple…before she went insane.

Although I have seen the movies a couple of times, I’ve not read the source material for years. But I’ll take a shot at your questions.

  1. I’m guessing she’s using pyro’s abilities. IIRC, in the books his powers were complete control over flame. He could definitely put a fire out, he just couldn’t create one.

  2. I’m not sure. Although if he did know she was alive, I doubt he’d keep this information from Cyclops.

  3. If the character your talking about is Asian with the finger claws (Deathstrike) then in the books she was definitely not a good guy. In fact, there was a huge amount of backstory changed and left untold in the movie. IIRC, the comic’s Lady Deathstrike was a Wolverine arch-nemesis seeking revenge because she thought Wolverine had stolen a process for manipulating Adamantium that her father had invented. She was a member of the Hellfire Club and later the Reavers, a vicious gang of mercenaries and murderers. I recall a story arc she was involved in which ended in Wolverine being crucified in the desert on a huge ‘X’.

She is stealing powers from Pyro. Notice that she reaches out and touches him before she can do anything about the fire.

Being the most powerful telepath on earth, I would have to assume he senses something familiar.

I assumed she was doing that to stop him. But it does make the most sense that she’s using his fire abilities.
How long does rogue keep the powers of a mutant after she’s touched them?

Magneto seems to have ‘improved’ his power since he discovered it, probably due to basic human practice. If rogue took his power would she have his refined abilities or would she just about be able to move metal about?

It depends on how long she was in contact with the mutant in question. The longer she’s in contact the longer she will keep their powers. This is what lead to (in the books) her permanent absorbtion of Carol Danvers’ powers they were in contact too long. She could prpbably kill someone if she held on long enough.

When Rogue absorbs someone’s powers she also absorbs some of their memories and personality so I imagine she would know a bit about using his powers fom Magneto himself.

I don’t really remember clearly but didn’t the Phoenix Effect show up briefly at the end of the movie? A bit of foreshadowing and probably why Xavier was smiling (although if he’d read the books he probably wouldn’t be smiling at seeing that. . ;))

According to the Marvel Universe handbook, she retains the borrowed powers in approximately a 60:1 ratio to length of contact. So if she touches someone for a minute she has their powers for an hour. It was not established how long the contact would have to be for the transfer to become permanent.

Of course this was from a source published 15 years ago so who knows if it’s still accurate. I understand she now manifests previously borrowed powers more or less at random now.

The pheonix effect does show up in the end of the second movie. They show a shot of the lake after the dam bursts, and Professor X, is talking, you can see the formation of wings underneath the water.

At the end of the movie when they are going over the lake it is Jean talking about the leap of evolution, not Xavier.
