Quote function just stops working at times

Single quote, multi quote, instead of seeing those wondrous words to respond to, just a blank response box. No pattern to it, but it’s happened three times now, including seconds ago, so I am reporting it.

If this is a duplicate please move or merge, or whatever. I checked the performance thread, first, no mention there.

Thought somebody might want to know about te problem.

That is all.

Test.

A minute before it wasn’t working. Now it is.

Annoying, but it also has stopped me from responding a dozen times now, so it’s all good.

I am magic.

I have often found (both here at the Straight Dope and other places) that Magic Mr. Reboot often solves these problems.

I can’t testify that would be helpful for you in this situation but it’s always worth a shot.

Please let me know if this happens again. Thanks.

Will do. Like I said, it comes and goes. Doesn’t matter if I reboot or not.

OK after some experimenting, it seems that this post here will not quote, yet others in the same thread will. If I use the above post in a multi-quote, no posts will show up.

I checked and a multi-quote in this thread works. But not if I include that post. Which is really strange.

The text box is empty for me, too, (I’ve posted about it before). But the problem I have doesn’t hinge on multiple quotes in a post.

It happens often with Firefox — that’s had any number of updates — on my Mac. So has the OS, for that matter.

Right now I clicked on Preview Post, and the text box for this post came up blank. So I went back one page, the text box appeared with my type, and I’ll click on Submit Reply.

Ah, Firefox. Thanks.

I’ve been complaining about this problem for some time. It is an intermittent issue I have run into and cannot narrow down to any characteristics to determine when the quote feature will work or not work. Just occasionally some posts will not pull up quotes in the edit window.

I can say one observation - I do recall having this problem since I’ve been using Chrome. I was experiencing it on multiple computers on IE.

Just a voice of solidarity here, to increase the odds that people believe this happens. It occasionally happens to me, as well.
I tried repeatedly to quote this op My Husband doesn't need to see your boobs! - Miscellaneous and Personal Stuff I Must Share - Straight Dope Message Board and only ever got a blank reply box.
This is the most recent example for me. I don’t think I’d blame Firefox, due to the problem’s intermittent nature. But there’s a lot about computers and internets that I don’t understand.

I just checked and that post won’t quote. The next one does no problem.

How strange.

Perhaps as a troubleshooting tool, a link to posts that refuse to be quoted may assist The Powers That Be.

Adding to the problem is that blank type boxes don’t happen with all browsers.

On my Mac, that quote in Post #12 causes blank type boxes in both Mozilla’s browsers, Firefox and SeaMonkey (SeaMonkey is based on Firefox), but not with Safari.

This inconsistency would make the bug doubly difficult to track down, though it appears to be cross-platform.

For the record (and an additional data point), I use Chrome on my Windows 7 laptop, and have been able to quote every post that’s been referenced in this thread.

Ok, I used Chrome as my browser, and was able to quote the very post I linked to upthread.

Tried to quote the same thing just now using Firefox, and was greeted with a blank reply box. Hmmmmm…

Yes, it seems to be Firefox is the problem for me. On a PC

The type box comes up empty with iCab on my iPad. I’m using the iPad now.

The only thing common to Firefox on my iMac and iCab on my iPad is Adblock running on both. But then I turned Adblock off on the iPad, reloaded the page — now with advertising — and tapped the quote button. The type box was blank again.

And if I tap the preview button on this post, the type box is empty, with Adblock turned off. I had to copy the preview above the empty type box, go back a page and paste it. So i couldn’t preview this last paragraph.

FWIW, it works properly with Safari on the iPad, which I’m using to post the quote and this message.
