I qualified that with “almost” but maybe somebody more pedantic than I can actually think of a reason.

Discourse has the unfortunate habit of not indicating which post is being replied to under some conditions. If you want to be clear that you are responding to the entire post and not a portion of it, and you want to be clear who you are responding to, then you need to quote the entire post.

There’s no great harm in quoting an entire 2-sentence post just above. Quoting all of a long post we all just read is IMO just ugly and impolite.

Leaving out or adding a period or exclamation point (any change) is a workaround.
