R.I.P. Paul O'Neil (Trans-Siberian Orchestra founder)

Huffington Post

USA Today

And TSO’s Web Site

Since we’ve been married 4 years ago, my wife and I have made it to 3 TSO shows, and I am still very upset that we missed a spring “Beethoven’s Last Night” album tour a few years ago. Beethoven’s is one of my top 5 albums (out of the 450+ that I own), and the Christmas concerts became one of our marriage traditions.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra is one of the most creative and interesting blends of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal and classic/symphonic that I’ve ever listened to, and I am very sad to hear this. I wish Paul’s family and friends all the sympathy I have. We have truly lost a great musician and composer. :frowning:

We saw their Christmas concert. Fantastic show. I was sorry to hear this.

No, this just sucks. Not only was he part of TSO but also Savatage and did stuff for other great bands too. He and John Oliva had their hands in some great music for the last 20+ years. :frowning:

Well, always sorry to hear of the world losing an artist, but TSO is no great asset to the art world.

To avoid outright TSing, here…

We saw a Christmas show and I was surprised at how much money, time and energy could go into a production without a trace of a soul and so little heart. A huge sound and fury, signifying… $60 tickets.

I completely disagree, and while everyone is entitled to their own opinion, please start a new thread if you want to disrespect Paul or the band(s).

Fair enough, but I’m not disrespecting anyone unless a contrary opinion about the music is such. I like the albums I’ve heard. I just expected more from a live performance.

I was a huge Savatage fan. Criss Oliva was a hell of a guitar player, great tone and tons of taste.

I like TSO but haven’t seen them live.

Slee

Um yeah, yeah you are. :dubious:

You have made your opinion known. Once. Which is fine, as there is no rule that says you have to speak well about recently dead celebrities. However, it’s time to stop posting in this thread now, because if you continue any further discussion about this, it will be considered a threadshitting hijack.

To everyone else, let’s use the Pit if you want to Pit someone…and use this thread to get back on track in discussing your thoughts on the recently departed.

Well, damn. :frowning: I’m very sorry to hear that. I love TSO, and have been to many of their concerts (both the Christmas ones and Beethoven’s Last Night). RIP, Mr. O’Neill.

Sad to hear. We lost some great music.

We loved The Lost Christmas Eve, it always made us want to see one of the shows. But then we stumbled across a TV special that was cheesy as hell, which confounded us.
I assume they will go on with the live shows though, no?

Well, RIP, sir. The TSO Lost Christmas Eve songs and DVD were a tradition at our house. When I had it up to my eyebrows with relatives at a hot, boring, overstuffed Christmas gathering, I could always manage to nip out to the 7-11 for more soda, get some air, and blast Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/14 on a CD until I felt human again.

The live shows are two different touring companies (west coast and east coast) with completely different personnel. I’m not even completely sure Paul O’Neill toured with them, but if he did, it was with the east coast company (so I never saw him). They’ll have big shoes to fill (especially since I believe he did quite a bit of the songwriting) but the tours are hugely lucrative and I doubt they’ll stop them.

Lol I have been to 3 Pittsburgh shows and assumed that Paul travelled/played with the West coast band because I don’t remember seeing him at any of our shows.

Update.

Aw, jeez. The autopsy reports that Paul died from yet another “accidental” mix of prescription drugs:

How many more of these do we really need? :frowning:

The problem isn’t when a celebrity dies of such a lethal mix… it’s when the next-door neighbor or Grandma does. The idea that OTC drugs are universally safe is a bit of pernicious and potentially lethal nonsense; the failure of doctors to carefully monitor all the drugs a patient might be taking is rarely excusable.

But yes, very sad that another celeb dropped dead because they were given unlimited access to powerful drugs on which… someone was supposed to educate and monitor them. I’m sure O’Neill’s doctor’s Bentley will fly a little black ribbon for a week or so in mourning.
